Oil for loader

I have a 8N tractor with a Wagner loader front
driven pump the oil reservoir is in the loader pipe.
Could someone tell me what type oil to use. I
thought we used to use non detergent #30 but I have
forgotten.
Thank you

on a closed system like that.. just about any 10-30w oil WOULD work.. however I'd use a cheap utf or iso32 hyd oil.. in many places utf fluid is as cheap or slightly cheaper than straight hyd oil.

Reason i'd ise hyd oil or utf vs cheap 30w motor oil is fo r the anti foam properties int he utf and hyd oils.

Several years ago I found two 5 gallon pails of 20w non-detergent oil, cheap. Been running that in my Wagner with no ill effects so far.
I did encounter some pump cavitation once but it turned out to be a collapsed intake hose.

if I found 10g of 20w oil for free.. I'd sure run that too in a closed hyd application.. and not bat an eye..

For best results use a hydraulic oil rather then an engine oil. It is blended specifically for this application and has an additive package that contains increased levels of EP anti-wear additives, rust and oxidation preventives, and anti-foaming agents.

The viscosity of hydraulic oil is specified using the ISO grading system rather than the SAE system used for grading engine oils. ISO 68 and ISO 46 are mid grades suitable for use in moderate to hot temperatures. In prolonged sub-freezing weather ISO 32 is probably a better choice and for really frigid sub-zero temperatures ISO 22.

The mobile equipment industry is increasing moving to the use of all-weather type hydraulic oils. Universal Tractor Transmission Fluid (UTF) sold at just about any automotive or agricultural supply is an inexpensive all-weather hydraulic oil and will provide excellent year round performance.

I have a similar Wagner loader that I have had since the late 60s and I have always used Ford's 134 oil year around with no trouble.

Thanks to all who replied. I will go with UTF ISO 46 or 32. It is very low on fluid right now in fact it wont move the bucked I wonder if I should get all the old oil out first.

UTF is not a traditional hydraulic oil and most UTF product containers do not have an ISO grade label on them. If they are labeled with a visicosity grade they are typically labeled SAE 10W20 or 10W30. They allhave a viscosity around 60 cSt @ 100C which is right on the bottom edge of ISO 68. Traditional hydraulic oils will all have ISO grade labels - often AWxx where the AW indicates heavy duty anti-wear formulations and the xx is the ISO viscosity grade - e.g. AW-68.

UTF has a much higher viscosity index than traditional hydraulic oil so it doesn't thicken as quickly in cold weather or thin as quickly in hot weather. That makes it more suitable for year round use where seasonal temperatures vary greatly. Either type oil will work fine in your loader but if you live in an area where the winters are very cold and the summers very hot I think you will find a UTF is more "convenient".
