8N Tranny problem

Have a chance to buy a 1950 (side mount dist) 8N tractor that has been reconditioned. Rebuilt engine, good tires and new paint. 4 speed tranny. Runs good. Brother -in-law was using bush hog and tried shifting before the mower completely came to a stop. I think from a forward gear to reverse. Seems like it is stuck between in two gears, but not sure. He is willing to let go for $3,000 since he paid $3,500. Probably could talk him down some.

Has anyone had this problem and if so what amount of work went into fixing the problem. Or what further info do I need to determine a closer identification as to the repair that is needed.
Thanks

Other guys will probably agree with me on this, but I believe that price is a little on the high side. Transmission problem sounds like a worn fork that'll slip out of the rail/gear you're in and let it go in a different gear. Just my two cents worth.

you don't shift a N on the fly, and you certaintly don't go from a forward to reverse gear whem moving.

if the pto does not have an ORC on it and the hog is driving the drive train.. that's even more of a problem.

add that to a worn shifter fork that it likley has and it is now probably stuck IN 2 gears.

goal is to shift it back into the gear it was in and see if you are lucky enough to shift out and into neutral and then pull cover for a looksee. if no go.. you will be taking cover off, and prying back to neutral. might spin engine a hair backwards if it is bound up

Another very good reason to have an ORC when using a mower.

With an ORC you can come to a stop and you don't have to wait for the mower to spin down and stop before shifting into forward or reverse.

When you solve your trans problem get yourself an ORC.

I'll second John's website for the info on the stuck gears.
He has some really great pictures of what you're looking for.

Location has a lot to do with price.
Here, a perfect 8N might bring that price, or you could buy
a late 60's x000 series tractor for that price like this one.
Not my ad, don't know the seller.
