Uh Oh...NAA sudden oil pressure loss

New oil pump and bearings about 2 years ago. 40 psi oil pressure all the time.

Out using the tractor...40 psi while working. Dropped tractor to idle and got off to open a gate. As I came back, tractor was knocking a bit. 0 oil pressure. I shut down and checked the level...it was about middle stick. I put in an extra quart..no change. I tried cranking for a bit w/o ignition...nothing (normally would build full pressure).

I am thinking relief valve.

Anything to check before dropping the pan?

Thanks,

Dave

valve or cracked pickup.

if you have the oil to spare ( it will be wasted ).. you can put an extra gallon in the sump then crank over and see if it magically makes pressure.. this is just a diagnostic test, not a fix. if this works. pickup is sucking air higher than nominal oil level.

either way you are pulling the pan and dumping oil.. so you may not want or need this diagnostic test.. etc.

Put a finger into the oil drain plug hole and see if your pickup tube is tight. Could be that the two bolt flange holding it to the pump is loose.

I will admit, for testing purposes only, to using cheap bulk hydro oil for this, once in a blue moon you'd see accel cheap-o utf for 19$ per 5g. Dumping a gallon into the sump usually did it, cost was only like 4$

I tried the suction trick...nothing.

Pulled the cover off the pump...I can spin the main gear by hand...sigh. Broken shaft/ or intermediate shaft.

Any good tricks for getting the nut off on the pump bolts?

One side is easy with a box wrench, the other side interferes with crank or side of block...I am having trouble finding an angle wrench the right size.

(quoted from post at 15:55:38 08/20/14) I would pull the distributor and check the intermediate shaft that drives the oil pump.

Broken...sigh.

Does this happen with type of drive or is indicative that something is wrong with the pump?

The pump had about 25 hours on it since new. The saft that failed was original to the tractor as far as I know.

Should anything else be replaced besides the shaft?

The pump looks good inside...no scoring or damage.

Thanks.

when they break, usually something has jammed the pump.
I'd want to know what and where it came from...
I had a 60's 289 or 302 Ford (can't remember) that twisted one up like a barber pole before it snapped.
Saved it somewhere, amazing how many twists it had before it broke.

BTW, if it is a slot drive, when you order a new one, stress what you need. I've had suppliers ship me the more common hex drive one.

I did not see any damage/debris in the pump. The ears broke on the drive. I did notice the metal appears very very hard...it fraturedl like glass. I wonder if was hardened too much and fractured from the vibration/stress.
