OT - Beware of Shopper Pro

A word of warning guys. This nasty little malware program showed up on my computer a week or two ago. It causes annoying little popup ads for everything under the sun and slows down your computer. It shows up under programs, but the Uninstall (system 7) program will not remove it. Googled 'how to remove Shopper Pro' got a number of solutions. Downloaded a program called Spyware. Followed instructions. Web site said it was $29. Gave em my credit card and wolla - got a charge for $69. Use software according to instructions. Result, computer will not start and is now at the Computer store. My credit card company is getting a call from me tomorrow to complain about Spyware.

Malwarebytes is a great program for malware and free.
Spybot Search and Destroy also a great program. Also free.
The constant protection feature will slow your computer if you opt
for it, but will also help keep you from getting them to begin with.
Sorry to hear about the hassle.

That's all 'puters do Hobo, inputs and outputs, ones and zeros.
Glad you got it. Now your computer guy still owes you! :)

Anytime I get something I think is suspicious I just do a system restore.
Set the computer to prior whenever I think it got infected.
6 years now without virus protection of Any sort and I wont let Windows update ever.
Knock on wood...

I would rather keep something out rather than try and get rid of it afterwards. Kind of like keeping the barn door closed!

I use automatic updates on windows 7 and microsoft security essentials or virus protection. WIll once in while run malwarebytes also.
I do like the restore function and have used it when I have screwed something up. Works good!

But all that said, whatever works for you is good!

I've never paid for virus protection. I'm careful about what I get into, and I can usually get rid of any nasty little annoyances with a little internet searching and file deleting. Computers get replaced every 3-4 years at my house anyways. On top of that we are almost completely converted to ipad and iphone.

One nice thing about being honest one doesn"t have
to sit and try to figure out what to say, just
tell the truth.

a liar can never tell a story more than once the same way each time. I got that advice from my uncle many many years ago. it has served me well.

Ultradog,

Really? Wow - that's amazing.

I do hope you back up your photos and important files though... just in case.

At 70 years old......I like telling IT, as I see IT! Problem is.......without IT being "politically correct", my mouth sure can get me in a lotta of trouble.

Fer instance......a compliment "lady in shorts". "You sure have great looking legs"! Reply.."I take that as an inuindio..I can have YOU arrested for that"!

So, say nothing, think nothing, and be all regards, DO NOTHING" and thus YOU will not spoil your DAY :) John,PA

PS: I learned that as long as there are no CHARGES, every thing is forgotten!

Good advice! Security essentials is free and works well, ditto Malwarebytes. Windows updates patch security holes. Better yet, buy an Apple and forget all those hassles.

(quoted from post at 21:10:49 08/20/14) That's why I gave up on Microsoft. And, bought an IPad.

I have an iPad too. Great for web surfing.
If you can see it. My eyes aren't so good.
If I want to do any real work though, the iPad is all but worthless to me.
Seems like there are twice as many steps to even get logged into work
and then half of the things I need to do are not available on iOS.

If all you do with it is web surfing, great way to go.
Don't get a jail-broke one and download apps from any place other
than the Apple store though. The limitation of downloading ONLY
from the apple store is what keeps them from getting a virus.
