whoops - now what?

So i put water in my 8n and drove it into the garage to do brake work. Got all done and went to start it. However figured I would change oil first. A small amount of water came out, but oil was black, so I didn't worry much. New oil and filter and fired it up. Oh boy the thing smokes bad. More of a white smoke, so I said must be water. Checked radiator and slight smoke/must coming out. Note to self that can't be good. So i checked head and all bolts were not tight. Retorqued head and tried it again. Still smokes bad. So did I destroy the head gasket by running it without the head being torqued right? It was probably only about 6-8 pounds under.

Thanks.

most HG need repalcement once they have leaked.. as they may have a blown out spot.

pull the plugs. might find one steam cleaned.

luckily.. head gaskets are cheap!

No, you didn't destroy the head gasket. If there WAS a leak between the combustion and cooling systems, there still IS. Tightening the bolts might work once in 20 cases, you may have one of the 19. Or it might be something else, but you're probably due for a head gasket replacement.

Just trying to follow. Were you working on the head at some point in the past or is this a new old tractor you just picked up. I'm thinking that the head gasket was already shot and your short trip to the garage did nothing more than what you already had.

Yes I already replaced the gasket once as
I pulled the head and did a little valve
work as I had a dead cylinder. Put a new
gasket in and then torqued it. Apparently
the gasket settled in since the torque was
so low. Guess I will disassemble and redo
the gasket. Dang I hate bad luck. Anybody
interested in an 8n that needs a head
gasket?????

Thanks.

Did you follow the torque procedure? It calls for torqueing it to specks then a short run to warm it up and retorque IIRC.

I torqued in correct order and short run.
Hadn't torqued after run. Been about 4
weeks working on brakes. What a pia with
loaded tires and wheel weights.
