Voltage to 8N Coil

Hello...
I'm working on my brothers 1952 8N tractor...
The coil is bad(cracked on bottom and one side)No
fire going to points...fixing to get a new one...
It has been converted to 12 volts...
What is the correct voltage to coil feed wire...
I checked the resistor and is showing 12.9
voltage(battery voltage) I know that can't be
right...
What is the most safe voltage I need to be running
to the coil and does anyone know the what type of
resistor or the correct resistor to install...
If anyone knows the coil number and resistor napa
number please post it...Thanks Raner...

You can buy a round coil that is 12 volt, problem solved. Look up BruceVA he has a list of 75 tips an I believe he lists the part numbers you are looking for.

Lets make sure you do indeed have a 1952 8N.

If you do, it has a side coil. It's round.

Is that correct?

The reason I ask is because it's rare to see a cracked round coil.

Or, is the coil square and in the front of the engine?

If it's a round coil, go to NAPA & get p/n IC14SB. About $25. It does NOT need a resistor.

So, coil voltage should be battery voltage (w/ the points open)

Thanks for the quick come back Rick...
This 8N has a front mounted coil and distributer...
Is there a way to mount a regular round 12 volt coil
in this type of distributer...
The reason for the question is this dam thing has a
coil feed spring that inserts into the condenser
lead and point extension tap hold down screw...
Thanks Raner...

Yea, that's the way it was made. I've got 3 of them.

Just pay attention to the C-clip position & how you wire the condenser & you won't have a problem.

Yea, you can put a round coil on them. Never seen a need to do it myself.

Found this trend...looks like it going to take a bit of work to make the round coil work on the front mounted distributer on the 8N I'm working on...LOL..

Actually you can go this route with IE and round can coil. No hard work involved. I'm running 12 volt square can coils on both of mine.

Rick

On our 49 8n we took the top piece off the square coil. And drilled a hole through and attached the (maybe negative) wire off the 12v round can coil to the spring with sauder. And the coil wire that goes on top the round can to the tab on the square can. Never had a problem with it yet.

Thank you all very much for pointing me in the right direction...
I just finished modifying the square Coil...
I pulled the cover off drilled two holes, One hole dead center where the old spring tap was and ran a wire for the negative side of the new 12 volt round coil I'll get tomorrow and hooked it up to the points spring and terminal lead to the insulated side of the points and hooked up condenser lead to the same screw...
The other hole I drilled just in back of the coil tab that feeds the distributer cap and soldered a wire to the original tab base retainer...
I checked for continuity on both wires and there doing what there suppose to do, Continuity is good and not grounded...
I removed the brass screw where the old coil spring feed inserted, No need for it now...
I'm all set now just need to get the coil and a wire centered coil wire so I can solder it to the wire I installed on the distributer cap feed... Almost forgot drilled two small holes on the coil cover and reinstalled back...Again thanks for helping me out on the coil replacement And last but not least I hate the original coil design that is on the front mounted distributer on the 8N...It's got a good design now...Thanks to you all... Ha...Ha...Raner... :D :D :D
