I just purchased an 8N this afternoon, it has coolant in the crankcase/been overheated I think.
No pictures yet, I will bring it home tomorrow. Just how tough are these engines, what should I be looking for / at when puling this engine down.Besides the cause of the over heat...Thank you in advance.

Do a compression test to see what you have for compression in each cylinder. Look at each spark plug, its condition(color) will tell you what's going on in that particular cylinder. Drain coolant, remove head and carefully examine the head gasket for broken pieces. Examine the head and block for any cracks.

First of all don't 'pull it down'.
Don't be another dolt who rips the head off.
Take it apart and you have no way of knowing what's wrong with it.
Do a compression test on it - dry and then wet.
Post the numbers you get and we'll go from there.

This just in, tractor # TO 39718 engine #142670

Looks like that is a TO20 or TO30 Ferguson, not an 8N. Does it have an overhead valve engine or a flathead engine? Angle of picture makes it hard to tell but I don't see the big axle nut in the middle of the rear wheels. Could be a big difference on what may be wrong. My 2 cents worth Greg NE

Thank you everyone, as you can tell I am new to this, I apprediate you'r help in steering me to the right info and forum. Thanks again.

These engines are known for cracking the block between the cylinders. They can have good compression and run well like this too. I hope that's not the case here.
