brake fluid in floor jack

I have a 30 yr old floor jack that needs some hydraulic fluid added, is it ok to add brake fluid to the jack?, what kind of fluid can I buy in a small can for this. not a tractor question but you fellas would know answer.

Bob, I bought a small container (a pint, maybe?) of hydraulic jack fluid at Wal-Mart for an old bottle jack - it worked fine.

I forget the brand, but it was the same brand as the line of floor jacks and bottle jacks that they carry.

Napa should have hydraulic Jack fluid.

Where did the fluid go, leaking I guess?

Remember, the seals, etc, are also 30 years old,

Just saying, might be time to look into replacing the old Jack or having it rebuilt.

My old floor Jack, about the same age, started giving me trouble, I just replaced it,

I never work under something without Jack stands, just do not trust jacks alone.

Stay safe,

ive never really seen liquid hydraulic fluid just an oily coating on jack, it lidts and stays there but you get very little lift with full handle movement, I think I will go with regular jack hydraulic fluid I don't work on tractor with out stand under either , thanks for information looks like brake fluid should only be used in brake systems.

Don't know about brake fluid in the floor jack, but my cherry picker (engine hoist) was low on fluid when I needed it yesterday. I've always thought ATF was the proper fluid for it, but I didn't have any. Instead, I used universal hydraulic fluid. Believe it or not, that hoist now works better than it ever did before.

i put gear oil in all my old jhacks. turns an old jack that creeps down to one that lasts another 10 years before needing any oil..

I've always used whatever Hyd oil was handy , TCH , Hytran , ATF they all work fine . If you use Hy Tran , it will emulsify moisture , and keep the interior of the jack from rusting ....
