More over heating help

Ok. I used the 8n today to pull my arena drag. It was steaming/spraying water out the radiator cap again. I tried to just keep going, and let it rid itself of the excess water (I over filled it). I just couldn't keep going. It was driving me crazy. I took the hood, and dog legs off. That ain't no joke for you, and a 9 year old boy. I took the radiator off. I don't think it has a thermostat. I didn't see one where I thought it should be. Water ran freely, from top of engine to the bottom. It looked like crap, but flowed. The radiator has no leaks, but it looks roached. Every fin on it is bent, and there is stuff as old as time in it. We got a decent radiator shop here in town. Should I get the tanks cut off, and new. Ores put in? Should I just order one from here? Do I even need a new one? I plan on new hoses, and a thermostat no matter what I do.

if the core fin are all bent and the core is packed with debris.. it won't cool good.

a comb can be used to straighten fins.. then garden hose water to clean thru it... then make the call.

thermostat goes in top hose.

Thermostat is not in a housing like a car, it is literally in the top hose.
Some put a plastic zip tie or a hose clamp around them to keep them
from moving up and down in the hose. I'm not sure its needed.
Lack of a thermostat would make it run too cool, not too hot.

I agree with SG on cleaning and straightening if it doesn't leak.
Quality of an original is far better than a replacement.

Water pump working and circulating water?

I think it's working. When you are running at higher rpm that is when it sprays the most. Steam was coming out of the radiator anytime the tractor was under a load. Something isn't right.

As previously posted clean the radiator inside and out completely. Install a thermostat. Refill with water, and since the hood is off, after it comes up to temp. feel for cool spots on the radiator which would indicate blockage. Check your belt for looseness as well.

I don't think we are communicating here.

The last time you posted w/ this problem, the near unanimous responses were that you overfilled the radiator.

Now, once again, you're back w/ the same problem and you tell us " I tried to just keep going, and let it rid itself of the excess water (I over filled it). "

If you keep over filling the radiator, it will keep spewing water out. It does not matter what else you do to the cooling system.....overfill it & it will spew water.

Open the petcock on the radiator or the block & lower the water level.

Means you have the radiator off, straighten the fins, clean out the debris & flush it out.

Then, reverse flush the block.

Put a t-stat in it.

And no, the cap isn't your problem. You said earlier that the water wasn't all that hot; the purpose of the cap is to increase the boiling point of the coolant.

Replace the coolant w/ 50/50 antifreeze & distilled water.

And lastly.....don't overfill the radiator.

The steam coming out the radiator cap was driving me crazy. I had to try and flush the block. I kept convencing myself there was an obstruction.

" I kept convencing myself there was an obstruction."

I'm not saying it isn't an obstruction.....just that the obvious & most likely cause of the problem....and the easiest & cheapest to fix.....is over filling the radiator.

Consider yourself lucky that it's happened on at least 2 occasions & the tractor didn't stop dead in it's tracks because of water in the distributor.

After seeing the radiator, I'm starting to be of the opinion someone removed the thermostat to compensate for the poor shape of the radiator. I'm dropping it a radiator shop tomorrow, for a second opinion.

Use a fin comb to straightedge the bent fins if you use a putty
knife you will cut into the core lines and it will leak
Don't asked how I learned this lol
