Sherman transmission

Hello, split tractor to change what I thought was a bad clutch.
Surprised to find what I think is a Sherman transmission. The
cable had been cut off so I didn't know it was there. Bly had
tractor for a few months.

Problem is two fold: lost hydraulic up and down but pto worked
so I bush hogged a field. Backing up with bush hog I stalled
tractor and when I restarted the engine I had no pto, forward or
reverse.

Had tractor towed home. Posted here and consensus was to
change out clutch and rebuild hydraulic pump.

Now that I found a Sherman transmission i'm wondering if that
contributed to my problem.

Today I bought a new cable that seams to push a piston in and
out of Sherman from the dash. No detents and i'm not really
sure which Sherman I have; step up, down, reverse or combo.
Based on everything that I've looked at I think it's a step up. It's
gray with cable and serial number 71913.

I've looked at the info on Sherman on old tractor site but still
don't understand it.

Questions. What does pulling the cable out or pushing it in do?
Is there a neutral position on the cable/piston that might have
caused all my problems?

How do I know if Sherman is bad?

I'd hate to put the tractor together to just have to take it apart
again.

Thanks for all your great advice.

i'll bet your cable sherman is a step up.

could it have been in neutral? check it! it's now the input shaft on the tranny.

as to having pto but no lift. whoever told you to rebuild pump omitted telling you to check things like seeing if the rod from the top cover to the pump was indeed moving the valve in and out. they can get stuck from grit in the sump.

Put the tractor trans in first gear. Move the cable in for OD or out for regular gears making sure that the cable is moving the shifter rod in or out. Turn the input shaft by hand. If you can turn the input shaft it's still in neutral. Move sherman cable in or out to see if it engages.

Well, here is an update. Put tractor back together after installing new clutch and cable for Sherman step up. Tractor would only move with Sherman engaged and gear shifter in neutral. Weird. Someone had mentioned that maybe I was stuck in two gears. Pulled shifter plate and all was lined up. Same thing. Luckily I bought a junk 8N and took that shift lever plate off to compare to mine. Looked the same but I put the junk one on and Wow, it shifted and ran in all gears and overdrive.

Bad new, after 1/2 hour of driving the tractor same systems. No go. Pulled new cable and it came all the way out. Guess I left to much slack of cable inside and clutch must have cut it in half. At least now I know what to look for. Ordered shift lever from red rock manufacturing and should hopefully be back in business in a few days. Goal is to install lever conversion with steering box removed so I don't have to split tractor again.

Can't believe the Sherman defaults to neutral if cable snaps. Should default to normal operations.

Thanks for everyone's input. Hope my write up will assist others in the future.
