Hello, split tractor to change what I thought was a bad clutch.
Surprised to find what I think is a Sherman transmission. The
cable had been cut off so I didn't know it was there. Bly had
tractor for a few months.
Problem is two fold: lost hydraulic up and down but pto worked
so I bush hogged a field. Backing up with bush hog I stalled
tractor and when I restarted the engine I had no pto, forward or
reverse.
Had tractor towed home. Posted here and consensus was to
change out clutch and rebuild hydraulic pump.
Now that I found a Sherman transmission i'm wondering if that
contributed to my problem.
Today I bought a new cable that seams to push a piston in and
out of Sherman from the dash. No detents and i'm not really
sure which Sherman I have; step up, down, reverse or combo.
Based on everything that I've looked at I think it's a step up. It's
gray with cable and serial number 71913.
I've looked at the info on Sherman on old tractor site but still
don't understand it.
Questions. What does pulling the cable out or pushing it in do?
Is there a neutral position on the cable/piston that might have
caused all my problems?
How do I know if Sherman is bad?
I'd hate to put the tractor together to just have to take it apart
again.
Thanks for all your great advice.
