Early 8N Steering

Hi,

My 49 8n still has the early style steering and I'm looking for some tips for proper adjustment and how to determine worn parts.

I understand how to adjust each side and the geometry of how it works, adjustment has improved the lash in the steering but I have binding. I didn't drive it much before adjusting, but it bound pretty bad after adjustment, and appeared to be worse turning to the left and back. I also put a zerk in the fill plug and filled with corn head grease. I have backed off a couple of bolt holes on each side and don't that i can tell that it improved binding much at all.

Does someine have a step by step procedure for adjusting this style of steering?

Also, how do i diagnose worn parts, and can i get repair parts?

See if the steering wheel rises and falls when the
slack is turned back and forth. If it does the
thrust bearing/s on the shaft are bad and that may
be the whole problem with it. All the sheet metal
have to come off to remove the sector or shaft. Be
sure all the old metal from the damaged bearings are
cleaned out of the sector housing etc. Be fun with
all that corn head grease! :O)

Thanks Zane,

The steering shaft doesn't rise up and down. I checked that. Overall I would say the steering generally feels tight, and when I adjusted it, with the front wheels off the ground, the wheels turned from lock to lock very smooth and almost no lash, but once there is weight on them, it seems to turn to the right pretty well, but turning to the left it turns a little ways pretty well, then it binds and gets hard to turn, when you get through that it turns easy the last of the way to the left, then turning back straight is the same.
