Is the Hupp dual drive trans the only one with the shifter on the right side? I have a 9n with what I think has a Hupp trans. The shifting lever came off the shaft and I am trying to repair it without splittig the tractor.

The shifting lever is under the oil bath air cleaner. On Smiths page it shows the lever of the Hupp between the air cleaner and the steering linkage so I am not sure what I have.

RGM,You say The shifting lever is under the oil bath air cleaner.By looking at a Sherman over drive and having worked on them, the way the shifter is made.I suppose if a farmer wanted the shifter on the right side for some reason.(only had right arm or hand) It could have been installed on the right for him. They were a dealer installed item.

No. ALL of the 'other' brands went out the right side. Hupp, F&T, Funk, Parker, Hiesler, etc.
I've even seen a Sherman Step set up to shift on the right.

I have a Hupp. It's a worthless piece of equipment. (The Hupp is just fine. Works great. Just that a step-up on a Ford is a worthless modification. A step-down would have been great. Grab some vice-grips, get it back into "normal" and leave it there! IMHO.)

From my experience, all Shermans have levers on the left side (from the driver's seat). Hupp and F&T have them on the right side. Have seen a picture of a Funk but don't remember which side it was on.

Is your aux transmission a two-speed (overdrive and direct) or a three-speed (over/direct/under)? Hupp made both styles, and the overdrive used a different, smaller style lever. The F&T came in overdrive only.

Does your's match anything on Smith's website? If not, you may have one of those really oddball brands.
Smiths Transmissions

My dad, who has been around these tractors all his life, says the overdrive was almost a necessity in the 9N/2N tractors. The three-speed standard transmission just didn't give enough speeds in the ratios needed for farming. The overdrive allowed for more gears between first and third, with a higher road gear in third. When the 8N came out, the four-speed transmission reduced some of the usefulness of the overdrive, and the underdrive became a useful option.

What was he doing with them? Racing?

The only use I can imagine for the overdrive is to move the tractor way down the highway somewhere to a new field. Second gear is all that's needed for most work, 1st gear for hard pullin'. But Fords simply don't go SLOW enough to use a cultivator and such. I wish I had a step-DOWN...instead of a step-up Hupp... because I never go anywhere except on my own place.

OR, you simply haven't come up with a task that makes the best use of the 'in between' gearing/RPM's.
Sorry but, Sherman (and Hupp, F&T,& Funk) didn't sell MANY THOUSANDS of those O/D's to penny pinching farmers for 'worthless' reasons.
I use the O/D feature in my 'Combo'(same gear ratio) often enough that I wouldn't swap the Combo for a 'Underdrive' for twice the savings.
Your tractor, your workload, your call.

How many? Does anyone have any reliable numbers on this matter?

The difference between 1st and 2nd gear in a 9N Ford is pretty small....so what use is there in making an even smaller interval? I've tried mowing with 2nd-High, and all it does is make more whine, very little difference in actual speed and the mower works hard. 1st-High is purely imagination.
3rd-High is really a difference, but it's so damned fast that it's dangerous with mechanical brakes, IMHO, especially on public roads and coupled with mechanical steering.

I've got one and it's worthless. YOU actually got one? What do you find it so useful for? Or were you simply making discussion? (Not looking for an argument. Just looking for a reasonable excuse to spend real money on one of them. If mine didn't come with it, I might be tempted to buy one and install it, but I'd sure be disappointed afterwards! I'd hate for someone to think this is gonna make their Ford a real machine cause it ain't!)

I just installed a sherman OD in my N, would have loved to find a combo for a good price, but no go.

biggest advantage i see to have the OD- plowing snow. I get a faster pto speed without having my throttle wide open, so when i get to the end and have to lift my plow, it does it faster, which means im onto the next row faster, which means im back in the warm house faster. Also I use my N to ride up to my mailbox sometime (its at the end of my street) and 4th is sometimes a bit too fast, but 3rd over is perfect.

Tiger Joe where the heck do ya live.
I bought a beautifully rebuilt Sherman Combo last year. Probably looks better than when it was new. Only thing is I am reluctant to split by Samantha Jean up and install it cause I never split an 8N up and not sure how to properly shim the combo up.

I am over near Kingston NY.
