Why would there be a hole in my carburetor in this location?

I tapped it and staked in a set screw with some RTV for good measure. This carb had so many issues, who knows. Runs fine now, but THE REASON FOR THIS HOLE IS HAUNTING ME :x

POSSIBLE casting flaw, or somebody just drilled a hole to make squirting in a little gas or ether for priming EASY.

Wouldn't be the first time I've seen that, although NOT at that exact location.

Wouldn't affect running a whit, just is a place for a little dirt to be sucked in.

Not very plausible but it is possible: previous owner of tractor was a lover of Mason Bees. These bees fill every tiny hole on my tractor with mud after they lay eggs in it. Those damned bees have mud all over my tractor!

Gas eats RTV,,, Loc-tite would be a better option...
