What kind of V-8, Chevy,Ford. Do you have a fan shroud around the fan could be the fix if not. Cant help on the running part without more info

Since he said it was bored 80 over and had a Merc crank I think we can safely say it is a flathead Ford V8. No engine I know of newer than that could safely take an 80 thou overbore (tho I know there probably are some I DON'T know about). Soooo, check the basics, make sure the cam and crank are in time, check the distributor for runout, bushing wear. Make sure the carbs are set up properly. Also was the block magnafluxed with no known cracks? Were the heads trued? Did the builder make sure the top of the block was true (flat)? Got to be something basic, like a leaky head gasket.

You have an engine problem, not a tractor problem- the only connection with a tractor is that it happens to be sitting in one. Could just as easily be in a forklift or a boat. Finding someone with specialized knowledge about a flathead Ford on here would be strictly a coincidence.

Start looking on some hot rod boards- jalopyjournal.com is a good place to start. Also, buy a copy of Street Rodder magazine at the grocery store- lots of vendors there, and other sources of information.

I know of a BBC that took a hundred overbore and was complete with a 8-71 blower (and a 200HP, just in case, NOS system) without failure

Reomack, you hit most of the things, there is one more that should be checked. Flathead engines have always had a reputation for overheating, even when they were new. One of the problems was a lot of core sand was left in the blocks after casting. Years later it has hardened up (like cholesterol in our veins) and prevented coolant from circulating everywhere. A large overbore adds to the problem.

The last dual carb flathead I worked on "Note" the guy they got it from said the engine had been overhauled but I think he left out it was 40 years a ago...

Check blowing coolant out radiator.
Engine flutter/surge/pop/backfire at cruise speeds
Test drive and confirm issue,
Run a compression test
Test Numbers, first hit/ fifth hit on gauge

1) 80/120
2) 50/125
3) 75/120
4) 75/110
5) 75/115
6) 65/100
7) 85/125
8) 75/120

Run a combustion gas leak test, test confirms a leaking head gasket. Air check all cylinders. 2,3,4,7 head gasket leaking. Re-torque head gaskets re-check combustion gas test,, negative no head gasket leakage. Replace both head gaskets, heating condition repaired. Engine still runs rough/flutter/backfire and rich. Unable to scope ignition system Replace non resistor plugs and copper core plug wires, scope ignition all ignition checks good engine still has a flutter/pop/ backfire at 2K RPM … Run a engine running compression test.

1st number running compression 2nd # blip throttle

1) 50/115
2) 50/115
2) 50/100
4) 50/100
5) 50/100
6) 50/100
7) 50-115
8) 50/115

Inject propane and it clears up at 2000 rpm,,, remove carbs and rebuild. Rear carb left side stopped up accelerator pump circuit stopped up parts missing

Drill and heli coil stripped carb bolts, drill out stopped up accelerator pump circuit for rear carb, repair accelerator linkage both carbs.
