2N valve guides

Can the 2 piece valve guides be driven down to remove them? They are really stuck and I have not been able to get them to move. Also, are the valve springs the same for the later (8N) valves as the earlier type that required the two piece guides? If the guides can be driven down how hard can I hit on the punch without fear of cracking the block?

I would soak them with PB Blaster or Kroil and try again. The last one I disassembled took a week or so.

I have been soaking with PB blaster. I have KROIL and will try that too. I cut the valve to remove it - can I now try to drive the guides down rather than try to pull them up and out. The retainer clip has been removed. I think the valves and guides are original in this engine even though it has adjustable tappets installed at some later date. The valve guides are stuck pretty solid after 67 years.

Go for it I would with out a doubt...

I did one of those "Case Study's" (spose to make you look smart) on a one piece guide set up that would not budge,,, It took a year of soaking to get them to move  That was 10 years ago and the engine still sets... A year went by and I lost interest in rebuilding it... I think I out smarted myself...

If you plan on saving those guides use a brass punch..

Folks can dream about penitrant ATF are any thing else they can make up,,, Combustion byproducts are a different animal that take special chemicals to break down....
