1950 8N differential noise

I decided to check my rear axle hub nuts for tightness after I ran it for about 6 hours. I grabbed the top of wheel and shook it and heard a clunking noise that sounded like right at the differential (center section). The hubs were a little loose so I took the nut off and checked the splines and there was still some room for them to tighten. (about 1/16 inch or so) so I tightened them with breaker bar and 6 foot pipe cheater and got about ¼ turn or less on each one. (broke breaker bar, it was only ½ inch drive, I have been looking for a ¾ inch drive) I don't know if Igot them tight enough yet. I still have the noise, maybe a little better but still there. I was just starting to tear it down for paint and I want to know if I have a problem.
What do I need to check. I had the whole rear end apart new brakes bearings etc and shimmed it so one wheel turns in the opposite direction of the one being turned so I think I got the end clearance right. I had the trumpet off to replace the lower lift pins.
The noise has a very metallic sound, like metal on metal
What should I check

TJ,Check for the brake drum rubbing on brake parts behind the brake drum. The cause- worn hub splines ,causing the drum to be to close to the backing plate. that is your (The noise has a very metallic sound, like metal on metal) The fix is new hubs and maybe new axles if they are worn also.

Thanks for the tip. I will check it next week, I am getting ready for paint and will be taking the rear wheels off
anyway. good time to check it.
