Couple days ago I asked for help with an 8N with a Dearborn loader that was impossible to steer and extremely limited in turn radius. More info needed: So (1) Steering wheel thrust test - rise/fall 1/8 inch on turn, (2) Sector test - About 1 inch movement on left pitman arm with wheel held steady(old style no adjust screw need to pull four bolts etc). My question on this is what degradation does this contribute to my steering? Any tolerances on this? Book a little vague.
Next (the tractor front is off the ground)and checking the left wheel (4) I found it bent and wobbles a good two inches as it rotates but turns freely and seems solid, spindle is tight and shows no loose play. I was told "somebody" bent it and the tie rod, but things seem ok here. The right spindle is truly loose and shows play indicating a worn bushing or bearing. Soundguy thought this might be my major area to look at and I'm wondering if this is sufficient to cause hard (read horrible) steering problems. It steers freely and full movement with the wheels off the ground!! So that's the second question - is this the major problem?
Finally, the third question: Has anyone any experience removing the hood and instrument panel with a Dearborn (jungle Jim) loader still attached? It looks like I can do it but I like to hear somebodies thoughts on it!!
It was 109 degrees here Sunday when I did all this investigating and that reinforced the idea to get my plan in place before unbolting sheet metal and fixing things!!
