6' finishing mower?

Would my '52 8N sidemount work a 6' finishing mower? It would be for cutting around the house/yard and not heavy field cutting (have a bush hog for that). I'm getting to where I just don't like running the riding mower anymore, hurts my back. I've had a disc removed from the lower back and there is no shock absorber down there. Also have a plate in my neck so that only adds to the misery. I see one for sale a little ways away for $600 and it looks to be in good shape. Just wondering before I go and take a look see. Don't really want to fool with a zt mower.

It'll pull a 6' just fine. Had my 6' KK for about 3 years behind a 50/51 8N.

6' is nice since it covers the rear tires. Just watch out around trees and such.

Funny how an old tractor has a better tide than a new ZTR. My cub ZTR beats my kidneys to death, the moles don't help.

I ran a 6 foot finish mower behind my 2N a few times.
No trouble for it at all. Definitely not the same as running
a brush hog/rotary mower. On those I'd stay at 5 foot.
You probably already know since you run the bush hog, but
be very careful close to the house, a fence, etc. When you
turn that mower swings wide enough to wipe things out.

A decent 8N will pull a 6' finish mower in most conditions so long as you do not let the grass become too heavy and still expect to mow it in second or third gear.

The ride is better because of the larger tire
diameter. The old farm wagons had very large
diameter wood wheels, and traveled the unimproved
Oregon Trail (you can still see the deep ruts in
many places) while not bouncing the contents out
onto the prairie.

Even the front tires are much larger in diameter
than the lawnmower/garden tractor rear tires.

i just picked one up a short while ago and it does great. only thng i could wish for is if it has the wheels on the front as well as the back. i'm using limit chains to set the front height but its just not the same.

also might want to consider an orc for the finish mower. not an absolue need like when running a hog. when yoiu get the mower try it without the orc and decide what you want to do.all a matter of preferance.

Sure, it will be fine.
If you live where there is a lot of rain and green, springtime,
ya might have to raise it some and slow down.
Plus one on getting one with 4 wheels.
They track nice and mow as well as any lawnmower.
The 4 wheel models have swivel balls at the front 3-point
mount that lets the mower track level even when the tractor tires hit a rut.

A side benefit of the 4 wheel models is that you can pull them with any tractor.
I have mine behind a Farmall Super H right now.
no 3-point hitch there. Just made some brackets and I drag it around. Can't lift it of course, but it tracks and mows nice.

agreed. 6' finish mower behind the average N as long as you don't let the grass get too thick between mowings

Thanks to everyone, I will give the guy a call! I do use an ORC with the bush hog. The model I am looking at also has the 4 wheels so that is good. Lets see if I can do a little wheelin' n dealin'....at least without the red head finding out...lol. Ya'll know how that works. You get enough "used" equipment out there with a little rust on it and she can't never tell the difference if you just got it or if it has been "sittin'" out there awhile! Oh Honey, I got that way back (well, 3 days could be way back dependent on how you look at it!). Baby, that was almost "free"...yeah right...$600 was almost free compared to a new one...lol. Ya'll know the drill by now...lol

Just remember that a 6 foot mower will extend out
about 6 inches on both sides past the rear tires,
assuming yours are at standard width. That is not a
problem as long as you allow for the overhang when
going pass fences, trees etc.

Yes!
You'll tear the wheels off.
This is the second time.

:)
You can't tell but I built that arm a couple of years ago. Made it just like original and welded it on the yoke for the tire.
This time I tore it worse - tore part of the bracket it bolts to off on the top of the mower.
Waah.
I've been thinking about fashioning some kind of a bumper onto the front of the mower wheel.
So it will kick the mower sideways a bit if it hits a tree.
I don't use stay bars on the FM so it will move a little.

You must've been going at a mighty clip for it to bend like that.
Is that 1/2" flat stock topped with another 1/2" flat stock?

Must admit that is a pretty looking bend. I could never get a side bend like that if I tried.

(quoted from post at 14:56:48 07/30/14) Yes!
You'll tear the wheels off.
This is the second time.

Only twice? I've done it four times in twenty years (the newer parts are beefier). The only other bendage was the A-frame for the 3-point. Amazing what a tractor can do if you hook the mower on something. Now I have my wheels set almost as wide as possible to prevent this. Now that my son is old enough to be trusted with a weed whip, I don't try to get as close to the trees and such. But I STILL managed to mow my WorkTunes last time I mowed!

I have a Woods RM600 (6' cut). I used it behind my 8N for about 15 years until I got my Jubilee. The 8N handled it very well, as others have said, as long as grass does not get too tall.
I bought a 7' cut Woods at an auction and tried it behind my Jubilee. It handled it but my yard is laid out for the 6' clearances. I sold the 7'.

Yes,
This was back in June. I hadn't mowed all year up at my land.
I set the height to the highest and knocked it down on Saturday. Dry weekend so the 'hay' dried good.
Late Sunday afternoon I hit it again just before we went home. Was hurrying, going at a pretty good clip.
The sad part, sadder than wrecking the mower, was I hit one of my butternut trees. Took a pretty good gouge out of the bark - as you can well imagine.
The mower I can fix. The butternut, not so much...

I use a 5 foot finish mower. If I had a 6 foot one I would kill my mower and/or beat up everything in the yard. Even with a 5 footer and stay bars I still manage to clip something several times a year. After 25 years of mowing with an 8N I still sometimes misjudge how much the mower swings when making a turn.

Ain't no fun running into stuff...lol. I do have a 6' box blade and 6 1/2' disc, so I am sort of use to a wider implement.
