Engine welding question

Greetings Forum Chums
Regarding my 48 8n high crop conversion.....the block has a
nasty looking braze weld repair from God knows when....from
the day I bought ......it right up high by the head.....here is the
rub....gonna completely rebuild the engine.....I have a 52 parts
tractor....good block....but if I use it....mutt tractor......should I
find a good welder of cast......make it a bit prettier?.....or trade
my 52 block for a 48.....buy used?.......live with paint over the
ugly welding???.......help me guys......I may be over
agonizing!!

a patched block would cause me great concern if I were considering buying it. a mismatched block, no problem unless of course I am stickler for originality, which I am not.

lotta ifs
If, I was going to keep it and use it and the repair was solid, I'd leave it be.
If, any kind of 'rare' model, I'd go to great lengths to keep the original parts in it.
If, I was going to sell it, I'd probably swap in the good block, but keep the original in case the buyer wanted it.
If, when rebuilding, I saw that it was just an external water jacket patch, it wouldn't concern me at all. probably half of the little Farmalls I own have been patched, no issues at all.

On most, a little coat of JB over the weld, press some sandpaper or a scotchbrite pad on it when it is setting up to give it texture.
Paint over it........gone!

want ugly? not an engine but ugly.
It was strong however, I let it be, been years, no issues
(yes, I have cleaned up the tractor a bit since I've owned it LOL)

Got all parts needed to get the '52 running? I'd stick it in there. Then you would have a side mount. If you ever sell it a side mount would bring more. Even if the weld repair is good and the numbers all match it will never bring much when time to sell. Same deal with miss matched numbers and a good front mount block. Not going to bring much.
If you are rebuilding it you most likely are doing so to use it and are not worried that much about it's resell valve any way. In that case, you will be happier with a side mount. I put a side mount in my '48 because of a crack by a cylinder. I don't regret doing in the lest.

Thanks guys one and all.....I value everyones opinion....think the Hi Crop is going to be 52....with a 48 rear end....the trans and engine are gonna match.....maybe no one will ever figure out that the rear end is a 48!!!!!....for sentimental reasons.....wanted to keep it a 48 since it was my first N.....but the welded block is forcing my hand....I will post pics as she comes together.......some 11.2 X 38 Firestones are getting mounted up as we speak!!

Where are you located Ed? I have a front mount block.
It is not a '48, but other than serial # no one would know.

Its a '46 IIRC. I have a complete 2N engine.
It is in a parts tractor I bought, but I did get
it to start once on a shot of ether.
I'm in Michigan though, might be a bit far to make it worthwhile.
Feel free to email me if you're at all interested.
I would sell it reasonable or work out a trade.
