Not perfect, but I'll take it. Before and after.

I call it a success!

I'll send you the 19 gal out of my F100 if you can make it look that good. May need to patch more than a few holes though...

JC, I just put a new tank in my '79 F350 too.
Someone had put a ratchet strap around it to hold it up
because the metal strap cut into the rusty tank.
I didn't mess with that one at all, I just replaced it.
I do the same with Ford tractor tanks most of the time because
they set right over the engine and I have a healthy respect for fire.

This one had some pretty bad surface rust on the top and
sides from setting out in the elements, but the bottom and
inside were solid so I sanded it down good, cleaned it up, then
used Rustoleum primer and Rustoleum "metallic" silver paint.
Not that "close to chrome" stuff, its just called metallic paint.
I don't think it turned out bad for a rattle can job though! :)

At first I thought it looked like you had it plated, but then I saw the paint on the sawhorses too. Beautiful job!

Thanks Scott! I bet plating would be pricey.
Cost on this was less than $15 in materials.
As Joan always tells me, my time is free, so...... LOL

I hope you are jesting and not telling me something bad about
that choice of paint for a gas tank. It certainly won't be a trailer
queen when I'm done so I would bet it gets a spill now and then.
But if you do have some experience with spills on that paint, it
would be nice to know for me and others!

Looks great. I could swear it looks like an aluminum tank.

Nothing like making something old look better than when it was new.

Pretty classy all right!
That Plasticote chrome that I used on emblem and headlight/work light rims doesn't have enough hardness and rubs off my work light with just the tarp over it. No durability/no good!

I'll be trying what you used next go-round.

The Tremclad red oxide primer I used on my rims, is actually the same company as Rustoleum.

The tremclad Red is also the best match I've tried for Ford Red.
(fire Red)

Cheers,
T

That's a very fair question R Geiger. I mentioned it was "solid"
but that's certainly a subjective term in this case.
If it hadn't been in good shape inside I wouldn't have done the outside.

I believe it is an original tank too. The aftermarket ones I have
put on have two holes, one for the x00/x01's fuel valve and
another to the side for the Jubilee sediment bowl. This tank
has only the one hole in the center.

Here are some pics of the inside, hopefully they come through well.
They are cell phone pics of my inspection camera, so we'll see.
First looking down at the fuel valve, then each way along the
bottom. The camera is color, the color in the tank is silver/gray.

Not a doctor GB, I don't have the "patience"!
(good thing this isn't the gong show)
Got your message when I got home from work today.
Great news!

Like you said, the inside looks real good, figured it was or you would not have taken the effort to do the outside so good! I just could not pass up the chance to make the comment! Inspection scope like that is very handy. We used them to inspect the inside of engines and transmission on Helicopters in my past life! :D

I like the scope, comes in real handy for gas tanks, engine cylinders,
inside of walls to check for wiring before you cut a hole, minor
plumbing inspections, those hard to reach/see areas on the back
side of transverse mounted engines, many more things than I first
thought I would use it for! I bought a Harbor Freight cheapie for
my first one. I'm still using it. Works fine. It will hook to a TV to
display a larger image. I wish it had the ability to take and save
a still photo, but after all, it is a cheapie. :)
