8N Steering Problem update

Couple days ago I asked for help with an 8N with a Dearborn loader that was impossible to steer and extremely limited in turn radius. More info needed: So (1) Steering wheel thrust test - rise/fall 1/8 inch on turn, (2) Sector test - About 1 inch movement on left pitman arm with wheel held steady(old style no adjust screw need to pull four bolts etc). My question on this is what degradation does this contribute to my steering? Any tolerances on this? Book a little vague.

Next (the tractor front is off the ground)and checking the left wheel (4) I found it bent and wobbles a good two inches as it rotates but turns freely and seems solid, spindle is tight and shows no loose play. I was told "somebody" bent it and the tie rod, but things seem ok here. The right spindle is truly loose and shows play indicating a worn bushing or bearing. Soundguy thought this might be my major area to look at and I'm wondering if this is sufficient to cause hard (read horrible) steering problems. It steers freely and full movement with the wheels off the ground!! So that's the second question - is this the major problem?

Finally, the third question: Has anyone any experience removing the hood and instrument panel with a Dearborn (jungle Jim) loader still attached? It looks like I can do it but I like to hear somebodies thoughts on it!!

It was 109 degrees here Sunday when I did all this investigating and that reinforced the idea to get my plan in place before unbolting sheet metal and fixing things!!

I removed hood on my dearborn equipt 2N this spring however I don't have the original valve controller, a replacement sits in same area. There are dents in hood from (it appears) a PO removing hood so 'might' work better to unhook plumbing on top and move controller over outa way. Lowered bucket to sit flat on ground. Drain gas tank completely. Remove 4 bolts on dash and 2 on doglegs. Had SWMBO (a smaller lady) lift one side and I other. Picked front of hood over rad neck pulling out gently on doglegs. The tricky part was snaking hood between steering wheel and dash. Took us about 2 minutes to remove. Hardest part was replacing hood between steering wheel and dash, took almost 4 minutes. I had to get in to seat area to guide into position. Pinched a few fingers a few times but no damage to hood lol.
Have read someone suggested removing steering wheel but I didn't have to.

I replaced rad so can offer no help on dash. Good Luck!!

Hey, hey thanks Howdy I thought I could and that's leaves me open to for a rebuild on the radiator as well as the steering box.

the bent rim is going to make a wobble moving.

the loose front hub/axle connection will fail soon with use... and will contribute to odd steering.

1" rotational play on that sector arm is quite awfull and is the main issue with your weird steering.

the thrust play isn't helping any either..

all the play is addative.

Thanks for the reply Soundguy I was kinda waiting to see what you thought about the "findings". Got a game plan now: I believe I'll order the bushings and bearing and redo the front spindles. I'm not sure about the sector arms and doubt there is any adjustment left, I think I'll just plan on pulling the hood and panel like Howdy1960 did and redoing the steering box. Might need some help later on so stand by - appreciate the help
