Main shaft and countershaft seals

Hey all...looking for a little assistance. Almost done with a
fairly extensive 8n restoration. Motor rebuild, clutch, new
steering and paint is done. Tranny and hydrolics worked
before, so i didn"t plan to open them up; however, I would like
to replace the seals for the main and counter shafts before
bolting the engine back on. Do you know if these can be
simply replaced by accessing through the bell housing, or is a
more extensive tear down required required? Your help is
really appreciated!

The transmission input shaft seal (Key #6) is easily replaced by removing 4 bolts. The countershaft doesn't have a seal (unless POSSIBLY we are looking at some type of aftermarket auxiliary transmission)?

Hi Bob, Thanks for the reply. Maybe I should have clarified between seal and gasket. The diagram you provided, (thanks, by the way!) does show a gasket (16) on the countershaft. If the input shaft is that easy, then I would assume the countershaft is as well, but my concern is that I remove the countershaft plate / bearing retainer and have something fall inside or drop out of position. If you have experience here, let me know! THANKS!

Dan, although nothing will fall out if you remove the front countershaft bearing retainer, personally, unless there"s signs of leakage at the gasket, I would leave it alone. If you DO remove it, carefully work it back in place before tightening to be sure the cups slide back over the bearing cones and the retainer is back against the gasket before tightening.

I can"t remember if the bolt holes (4 up above, and 4 down below are "blind". If they are, put some sealant on the threads before re-installing the bolts.

Thanks Bob, this helps. Yes, there are signs of leakage there. Otherwise, I would certainly leave it! Appreciate the help!
