9n faltering.

So it's been a long time since I've been on this board. My 41 9n has been getting hard to start. It finally began to shut down as soon as it meets resistance, like with the mower or bush-hog. Now it just barely try's to fire and stops. I put a new carb on it. Same. Put new plugs. Better spark but still no change. Plenty of fuel. Took the carb off and it's full of gas. Cleaned it up and still nothing. I've not done anything to the points since I have a brite blue/white spark. But maybe it is something wrong I'm missing. Not sure where to go next. I've read several post about this type of problem. Seems like fuel is usually it. But mine seems ok. Any tips would be great. Thanks Dale in Va.

does some choke help when it falters?

does spray starter fluid help?

have you compression checked her?

It does not help at all. I can get her to crank fine, but not firing up. If I keep trying to crank it will once or twice try to but just a few puffs. Have not checked compression. It's on the long list searching for the trouble.

try running the starter off a donor battery and ignition on it's own battery and see if that makes a difference.

It's a 12volt system now. I've been jumping it to my old truck and it spins very well. Still only pops once or twice every so often. Checked the spark again and still bright. It must be fuel. But it seems right. The plugs are never wet with gas after I try for a bit. No flooding but shouldn't they get wet with unburned gas?

some things you say don't add up.

you say it spins fast, has great spark, have tried start fluid.. but it rarely pops.

those almost can't co-exist.

good spark, spining, SOME compression and start fluid should make consistant pops and start attempts.

I know that's why I'm pulling the last of my hair out. There is gas to the carb. I'm just stumped.

Hey DaleVA... Let's see how the gas is flowing by dropping the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb...
Also since you've got spark and fuel (possibly) how's your air intake?

There is gas draining from carb bottom. Take the carb back off and check the vacuum. I did put my hand over the air intake of the carb and there was enough suction to fill that part of the carb with gas and it flooded out onto the ground.

(quoted from post at 16:39:57 07/26/14) that tells you that you should be getting pops on starter fluid.

RE-CHECK spark.

Yeah. Plus I was gonna go after the points if there is any question anyway. So that will be tomorrows project. Thanks

Did you check spark at all of the plugs/plug wires?
Are they all plugged in good and in the right order?

Just asking .. how long did you let the gas drain?...I think I would let it go 1 or 2 minutes. Could be wires as Royse suggested.

I let it drain and took it off to check and blow out and clean it in case something got in there. Today I pulled the points n stuff. Gonna pick up a set tomorrow plus wires and go from there.
