2n 12 volt conversion soundguy

Could i start the tractor with out alternator and unplug gen re wire tractor like a12 volt and put fully charged battery in it to see if tractor is worth parting or fixing . Then all i need is wire and old battery laying around. The tractor is currently 6volt the 6 1 wire gen harness looks newer.then i would not have to buy 6 volt battery to see if tractor is worth converting to 12 volt

Not souNdguy, but yes you can start it on 12V.
Do not run it long that way unless you add a resistor to the coil.
Me personally I would just disconnect the generator.
No sense having it try to charge a 12V battery.

Well I ment royse, sound guy, bruce, dell, old hokie, and any other master blaster that I left out iamsure I missed one.there a little rear end kissing for you guys

LOL that's funny Tom.
I don't think any of us are out here to get kissed.
Just trying to help and SG is probably at work! :)

I have most of the parts to make a 12 volt conversion missing 2 brackets I can make . if I went to you wrench it to get used alternator 1 wire or 3wire what might I be looking for make and model 90s s1o

You could hook a 6V battery charger to ground and the coil then jump start it with 12V to test it out and see if it's worth fixing or parting.
You could even drive it around as long as you had a long extension cord. No charging system or even battery needed.

It doesn't need to charge to run.
No need to worry about an alternator or generator at all.
It will run as long as there is a charge in the battery.
My 6V system for example ran for months before I had to recharge
the battery. Off and on starting, running for an hour or two at a time.
When the time comes that you know it runs and want to convert
it to 12V, a 1980 or so Chevy pickup alternator or so works.
Let me know if I'm misunderstanding your question here.
Today has been a long day for me! LOL

Shoot I ran my 841 for years with a 12 volt battery. All I did was charge it once in a while since it had a bad alternator on it. But then one day the bearings in the alternator went bad so I had to replace it. So yes you can run one for many many hours as long as you charge the battery up when it gets low

Bob has posted a very helpful link on alternators and buying a new/used one for our tractors.
I think this was it, application data near the bottom
