hydraulics on 8n

recently I posted my 8n hydraulics wouldn't hold a position, before getting into it I tested again and put 100# wheelweight on towbar and hitch would lift it easily but it overshoots and then slowly settles back to the lift position handle setting and stays there for hours. not sure why it does this but going to hookup drag bucket and if it will lift and settle back and hold that I think I can live with it, any comments on why it acts this way?

" please explain again just how that works"

Tip # 58 at the link.

If it won't hold in position control, try the quadrant adjustment.

If that doesn't work, time to pull the top cover & adjust the internal linkage & probably replace the cam follower pin.

draft control is not there to preventt he plow from hanging on roots.

draft control is a sensitivity setting. you set it so the plow runs at a certain depth thru a certain material.. if the material gets tougher, the plow is raised to maintain the lower draft setting.. etc. it's not there to snatch it up over tree roots.. etc..

A sticking control valve caused by dirty oil can cause this condition. When the lift goes all the way to the top of it's travel there is a big dowel pin that the ram cylinder piston makes contact with and pushes the control rod back to put the lift in "neutral" position.

Another thing that can cause that condition is the return spring is broken or in some way not pushing the control vavle back to the exhaust position.
You can check this by removing the right side inspecion plate and with the touch control handle in mid range and the little mode lever pushed down to draft mode you can reach in and manually move the control rod and thus the valve/s and see if the spring is pushing the control rod back after it is pushed forward manally.

I recently purchased a 1952 8N that runs pretty good, but I have a question about the hydraulics. Does the PTO have to be engaged to raise the three-point hitch arms? On this tractor, the hitch won't raise without the PTO running, so I assume the PTO runs the hydraulic pump. This is kind of a pain when using a mower since the mower can't be raised or lowered without the PTO-powered blade running. May just be the nature of the 8N. Any input, anyone?
