9N will not start

I went to start the 9N. It was turning over great but not starting. On about the 10th try it started then died.

The next time I tried to start it nothing happened when I pressed the starter switch.

Does anyone know why?

btw: This is a 6V system

is this one of those 'guessing' questions where you tell us warmer or colder?

It would be much faster if you did some diagnostics. First one would be measuring the voltage on the battery, unloaded, and then under load hitting the starter button.

you may simply have discharged battery 'syndrome'

Bad connection at the battery or the starter switch or switch has gone bad or you have it in gear

I assume the battery is good because the lights work and I measure 6 volts with the multimeter when it is loaded and unloaded.

I tried to jump the tractor with a 12 V and still nothing happened

All connections are clean and tight.

Starters do go bad. Did you jump to battery to battery which is a no no or did you jump it right to the starter?? If to the starter did you get a spark when you did so?? If no spark the starter may have lost a good ground. By the way one should never hook a 12 volt battery to a 6 volt battery the 6 volt could blow up in your face and that can equal not ever seeing again

I jumped both ways. I got spark when I jumped battery to battery.

I did not get spark when I jumped it straight to starter.

I am aware that it is dangerous to jump battery to battery. I always wear eye protection. Thank you for the warning.

Do you think it is my starter?

I like the new tractor tips. I did not know that the list was expanded to 75.

I have not heard about Howard auxiliary transmissions.

I have been researching sherman transmissions and it would be interesting if someone could add sherman transmission tips the list

I'm not sure that the advice you're getting here is very helpful.

I suggested that you charge the battery & check it w/ a hydrometer. You said " I assume the battery is good because the lights work and I measure 6 volts with the multimeter ".

That's not a reasonable assumption.

You could easily have a discharged battery.
75 Tips

Maybe the starter or the starter ground or a weak 6 volt battery. With out a true load test a battery can read 6 volts but not have the amps to spin a starter

Also on the 6 volt system make sure all of your connections are clean bright and tight
You may want to remove the starter and clean the mating side of the starter and transmission housing.
While you have the starter out you could bench test it.

You may have fried the starter, if you tried ten times before it started and overheated it. You could test it with an ohmmeter, or yank it out and have it tested. A good multimeter is handy to have for troubleshooting.

Good luck!

" I am going to work on the starter next"

FWIW.....and as others have said.....

The next logical step is to check cables & connections.

Start by loosening the starter from the block (see tip # 36 first) and cleaning the grounding surface.

Then check both battery cables & all 4 connections: clean, bright & tight.

Lastly, before I'd pull the starter, jump it safely per tip # 43.

If that doesn't work, make sure the bendix isn't locked to the flywheel.

At that point, I'd pull the starter.
75 Tips

I pulled the starter and disassembled. I cleaned out the dirt and copper dust and reassembled. Then reinstalled the starter onto the tractor.

When I tried to start off of the 6V nothing happened.

Then using a 12 V battery, I connected one end to the starter and the other end to the frame. The engine just barely turned over.

Seeing that the 6 V battery is good what do you think the problem is?

Did you clean the mating area between the starter & the block?

75 Tips

" Would you recommend that I go back and do a better cleaning job? "

Yes.

An inch or so nice & shiney will be fine.

If that doesn't work, firmly clamp the starter in a vice. Hook a battery jumper cable to the starter post. Then, hook the other cable to a clean area on the starter housing. If the starter doesn't spin, you found the problem.
75 Tips

I removed starter and cleaned surface until it was shiny. I bench tested the starter motor and it spun like a top.

I reinstalled the starter and tried to start it with the 6 volt system and nothing happened.

Next, I connected a 12V battery across the starter motor and the tractor turned over and started.

I drove the tractor for 30 minutes, turned it off and tried to start off the 6 volt system and nothing happened.

What do you think the problem is?

" I reinstalled the starter and tried to start it with the 6 volt system and nothing happened."

Just to make sure I understand what that means......

You are pushing the starter button on the tractor and nothing happens, correct?

And, you have a tested good battery & a clean starter-to-block ground, correct?

Your starter bench tested ok & will start the tractor w/ a 12v jump, correct?

That leaves only 3 possibilities:

Your battery cables are defective. (see tip # 41)

Your 4 battery cable connections need cleaning & tightening

Your starter switch is defective.

The cheapest & easiest to fix/check are the cable connections & cables.

Check the switch; if that's defective, it will cost a bit more than cables to replace.
75 Tips

The answer to each of your questions is correct.

My battery cables are less than a year old. They are thick 1 gage cables. So I doubt they are the problem. All 4 connections are tight and clean.

So that leaves the starter switch.

Is there a way to test the starter switch?

Thank you!

Assuming you have the OEM starter switch.......

It has 2 posts. One side is from the battery, the other side goes to the starter.

Check for battery voltage on the battery side.

Then, press the starter button & check for battery voltage on the starter side.

If you don't see battery voltage, pull the switch off & bench test it. If it works on the bench but not on the tractor, chances are the linkage is bad.
75 Tips

I got voltage on the battery side but not the starter side.

I also put a jumper across the starter switch posts and it turned over.

What should I do now?

Replace the part. Either 11512 or 11515 whichever is worn.

I'm not sure if it's available; call this site or nnalert's to see.

Or maybe a used one.

These guys should be able to help you w/ used parts:

John Smith smith8NATatt.net

Rod Mondor fltractorATpeoplepc.com

Replace the AT in the address w/ @

Or, start another thread, explain the problem (the starter button does not engage the starter switch)& ask for a recommended fix.
