8n coil problems keep burning out

1953 8n i keep burning out the coil and the condenser. 12 volt sys. i buy coil with internal resister do i need to go to a external resister like a d-1106 and a coil with no internal res. is the d1106 the right res. how many ohms should the res. have.any help will be greatfull

No, not really.

If it's a 1953, it's not an 8N. It's a NAA.

Overhead valves or flathead?

Front distributor or side distributor?

No again. The do not have "internal resistors". They just have more windings to increase the resistance.

If it's a side distributor, go to NAPA & get a IC14SB 12 volt coil. Ho resistor needed. It has an internal resistance of 3.25 ohms

Coils burn out from too much current (see tip # 38 at the link) And, it's really, really hard to burn up a round coil. And next to impossible to burn up a condenser.

So, I think you've got something else going on that gets "fixed" for a while after you replace the coil & condenser.

Tell us the model of the tractor & how you have determined the coil & condensers are bad.

First you need to figure out what you have. 1948 to 1950 8N had the front mount distributor. Then in early 1950 they change to the side mount and that has a round can coil and they made them till 1952. In 1953 they came out with the Jubilee. So as Bruce says
 
ditto what bruce said.

I can count on one hand how many 'burnt out' ignition condensors i've ever encountered.. and still have enough fingers left over to open a door knob.

if you are 12v and a side distribuitor type engine with a regular cylindrical coil. go with that napa ic14sb.. it's good to go.

no internal or external resistor. it is simply would witht he correct gauge and length of wire to make it correct for a 12v application.
