Yet another hydraulic question

Just removed right side inspection cover on 43 2N to see what can be seen. There is a little bit of fluid coming from piston (while still cold only about 1 drip every 2-4 seconds) however there is much turbulance in the sump. Movement looks like the outlet on a swimming pool cleaner. Not knowing how much turbulance is normal, should I presume the safety valve is bad?
With a 5' rotory mower installed and only about 4-5 minutes running time I shut it off and mower dropped like a rock. I did notice fluid drips from piston more like 2 every second.
I am leary of sticking my hand in there while running to feel if anything coming from safety valve area.
I can only afford to fix/replace one or the other right now.
Thank You for the help in advance,
Norm

Get yourself a length (~3') of clear vinyl tubing and slip it over the end of the relief valve. Start the tractor and raise a load. If the relief is leaking you will see oil collecting in the tube. No oil = no leak. I don not know what size tubing you need and it's not possible to slide the tubing over some aftermarket valves.

TOH

ditto what toh said.

also. with a moderate load lifted, shutdown immediately and look in and listen for leaks.

common areas are pinhoes int he standpipe, top or bottom gaskets at the standpipe. gasket under cyl to top cover.. etc.

with engine and pto off. will be safe to look around in there.

a load that drops like a rock is pushing 8-10oz oil out fast...

Thanks SG and THO, After shutting down did not hear anything but am a little hard of hearing. I did see some swirling in fluid till load stopped moving also did not see any drips from top besides what I said from piston and that was maybe 1/8 oz in about 3-4 seconds. Will figure what clear hose needed and get some Friday or Saturday.
I do like what my ZaneThang does as long as I keep RPMs up and moving forward :)

ou can also drain the oil level down a lot, leaving only enough to cover the pump intake area, which is the control valve and at that point see a lot more. The PTO shaft as well as the relief valve will then be out of the oil and visible for testing & observation. Transmission & differential lubrication will be reduced, but for a few minutes, inconsequential.

I have seen a few real bad relief valves none of them I could confirm bad by putting a finger over it are look'n at the turbulence of the oil...... Hose size 1/2" clear hose found at most home improvement/hardware stores... It just a little more work to drain down the oil and worth the time...Good luck

BTW a slow drip from the lift piston izz notcher problem...
