OT Is This True

I can't really remember where I heard it now but someone claimed that you should never operate the power windows in your vehicle without the engine running.

Anyone know why this would be true? I know that we have at lease one electrical engineer here.

Sounds like one of those trick questions on the Guru test...
Give us a sporting chance like

True are False

are

mechanic A says
Mechanic B says
Both A & B
Neither A&B

To give you a logical answer if the engine will run you should have voltage to run the window motors.

If it will not crank it may not...

If it cranks you should have enuff voltage to work the window motors...

Is it a

Hybrid
Fuel Cell
Gas are Deisel.
6V are 12V
Front are side mount..

If it has to be running for the window motors to work good you are in Deep DO DO...

What is a "power" window! Is this something new?
When I turn the handle on my vehicles window mechanism it always moves the window up or down.

I roll both windows on my car down and then back up every day sometimes twice a day without the car running. I like to take my work breaks in my car. I've never had a problem, and I can't think of any reason not to do it. If it was a big deal the car would be made so that it had to be running to operate the windows.

They couldn't do that due to a safety factor.

What torquestripe said x2
In 35 years of owning cars/trucks I have never had electric windows or seats. Oh wait... does rear window in station wagons count? cuz I had 2 that didn't use a crank lol

C,
Not sure, maybe or all of the above:)
The only possible, possible reason not to raise or lower windows with out engine running is because of the lower voltage/higher amperage is not good for electric motors. In my shop I always use heavy duty wiring to maintain adequate voltage for my equipment. My brother once told me the motors for electric windows are not much to begin with so why take the chance. Just a thought!

If ya live up here in the frozen North, ya don't run anything
electrical without it running. Yer gonna need every little amp ya got to start it tomorrow morning LOL
(dumb new vehicles that leave lights on for a bit after you get out, and have stuff that draws power when parked. Don't any of those design engineers live in a frozen wasteland......Having to keep a battery tender on a new truck just cuz ya don't go someplace every day is just lame)

Out doing my exercise walk, can't think of a practical reason to day never use windows when not running. I eat lunch in the truck at the park many days, kinda nice to be able to raise the window if the wind goes sideways a bit.

sounds like one of those " the polock died because he couldn't get the tailgate down " kinda things.

Red is undoubtedly the smartest guy I have ever encountered!!!! My mother thought he was funnier than Red Skelton and coming from her that is saying something!!!
