The serial # is 9n167507 1944 there is no hole in hood for
air cleaner i see some pics of 44 9n and they have no tube
through hood is this right the serial # are very crisp . I
might buy the tractor

Pre cleaner would be under the hood on 9n/2n and
sticking thru the side of the hood on 8n and up.

Thru the hood air intake was a dealer installed option, not from the factory

I am looking at the original book that came with my 1952 8n.
Serial numbers listed as follows.
9N-9NAN
1939-1
1940-10276--- 10234
1941-46018--- 45976
1942-88934--- 88888
2N-2NAN
1942-99047--- 99003
1943-105412--- 105375
1944-126575--- 126538
1945-170018--- 169982
1946-198767--- 198731
1947-258540--- 258504
8N-8NAN
1947-1
1948-37908
1949-141370
1950-245637
1951-343593
1952-442035

The second number in each row comes as the starting number for each year from my 1995 version of the Ford Shop Manual.
Don't know why there is a difference in the numbers, However, the tractor you are looking at doesn't appear to be a 9N since they were not made in 1944.

With the air intake under the hood and the puller fan replacing the pusher fan, working in dusty conditions required servicing the air cleaner often. The air intake extension through the hood was a dealer installed option to draw cleaner air from above the hood.

TexasCowboy, the reason for the difference is that 2N's did not
have their own serial numbers. The 2N serials started with "9N".
A 1944 serial number that starts with "9N" is a 2N tractor.

As said, the through the hood breather was a dealer option.
So were lights as I understand it. Dealer or owner installed.

Edit, I just looked at that list of serial numbers again.
I don't think they were that far out of sequence.
I have the same starting number as your book for 1944,
but I'm pretty sure they made more than 37 of them.
Other serials have big gaps between years in that list too.

That is a terrible tractor. You should sell it to me immediately so you don't have to suffer it any longer.

Technically a pre cleaner is a glass jar that in a
9/2N sits under the hood and in front of the oil
bath air cleaner. The extension that goes thru the
hood is not a precleaner but just removes the air
intake away from all the dust.

you are reading the list wrong. I only listed the starting numbers for each year since the ending number for that year is the next years starting number, minus 1.

I think I see what you mean.
You listed starting numbers for both the Ns and ANs separate.
That would make the numbers match up with what I have.
Thanks for setting me straight!
