I just wanted to say thanks for all the replies to my posts. This is probably the most helpful forum that I have joined to date and not once has anybody beaten me up for asking the normal new guy questions. This if my first tractor, although I have operated a few over the years, I don't have much knowledge in this arena. My dad had a Jubilee and my granddad had what I think was a Farmall M, the one with the engine sitting off to the side. Had a hand crank to start it and he used a ball peen hammer to short something on the ignition to kill it.

I hope to have the 8N going soon, thanks to all the good advice here.

You're welcome.

My guess on your grandpa's Farmall is a Cub, an A/SA, a B or a BN.
Those are the ones I remember with the engine off to the side.
The B and BN had a narrow front with the left tire sticking way out.
The cub and A (and Super A) had wide front ends with the left
tire tucked in close to the seat/shifter.
Great tractors. I still have a cub and two BNs.

Giving the grandkids tractor rides on one of my BNs.
Note the room for the extra seat on the left.
