Small engine question

Forum Members,

Have a question concerning an older Briggs 8 horse generator engine.Want to haul this generator up north but it runs for a while and shuts down. Took the carb apart and everything was clean. Only possible trouble spot was the float may not be set correctly. Does anyone know the proper setting for a small engine float? I adjusted it to a parallel position relative to the carb body. Will attempt to run it again today. Any and all thoughts are welcome.

My experience, of you problem, was that the problem was in the fuel tank. Some in those year of production, has a screen at the outlet, inside the tank. This screen collects years of dirty fuel (usually from gas cans not having caps on spouts). The screen allows enough fuel to start, but crud settles and plugs the screen, shutting the engine down.
Shine a light in the tank filler, to observe. Solution is to take the tank off, shake, and drain into a pail (so you can observe crud).
Another problem is an inline filter, clogging will give same symtons.

Had same issue an old MTD garden tractor. Ran for a spell and would shut down. As C.K. suggested, my problem was the metal screen in tank. Tried blowing crud out of it but so rusted it disintigrated. Installed lawnmower sized inline filter and now runs for hours.

Forum Members,
Thanks for the replies. Went out this afternoon and checked the in tank filter for blockages. There were none. Did one more checkpoint, the gas cap breather openings. Bingo- the gas cap breather openings were completely plugged. Had to use gasoline to clean it to working specs. Believe it is fixed. Thanks again.
