I drove the 8N last year with no problems, parked it in the shed and pulled the battery. Put in a charged up 6v battery last week, and not a sound!! I've got 6.3 volts to the thingy on top of the starter and when I activate the start button the voltage drops but not a sound from the starter!

Any suggestions ???

Thanks

Clean the leads, check for loose connections or where mice chewed through. Get the battery tested, it can still show a voltage at the terminals but not have the ability to produce the necessary cold cranking amps to start the tractor. What kind of charger did you use? How long was it left on?

1949 8N with front mount dist.
Batter new last Sept, checks out good on load tester. All connections cleaned. Still not a sound!!

From time to time I experience the same from my starter. The reason is that the Bendix or gear end of the starter jams up on the fly wheel. I loosen the two starter mounting screws jiggle the starter and the gear pulls back. Re-tighten the screws and I am back in business.

If you attempt this, make sure that after loosening the screws you do not tug on the brush end of the starter only. Grab the whole starter body and pull out of the fly wheel housing as a unit. Otherwise you will quickly learn how to pin up the brushes so that you can reassemble the starter.

Jumper cross the solenoid big studs and see if it spins over that way. Make sure it is out of gear when you do that. If it spins then you have a solenoid problem

Actually, I just finished trying that and NO GO!!
I'll try the tap tap tap as well as loosening the mounting bolts.

PS I might add that the solenoid is completely silent. Not a buzz out of it at any time.

Can you turn the crank shaft by grabbing the fan?? If the belt is as tight as it should be you should be able to do that but if it seems locked up good chance the starer drive is locked in the flywheel.
By the way you say nothing did you at least get some good sparks?? If you did not get any sparked you have a connection problem

I would normally test for a spark as the starter turns, but I've not got there yet!
I did the tap tap on the solenoid and got a faint split second whir from the solenoid when I pushed the start button. I also loosened the mounting bolts and moved the starter a wee bit but again, no improvement.

I have just tried turning the fan and after a few tries the crankshaft turned. I kept turning so the crankshaft made about a half a revolution. I then tried the starter and VOILA!! IT now turns over nicely :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

Thanks folks for all of the replies and suggestions and especially to OLD.

Your problem is by no means fixed just because it started. It will stick again. Take your solenoid apart and clean it.

double check all your grounds and connections.. including bat cable connections and terminal ends.

look at that solenoid. it might like a swish in some mineral spirits then left out in the sun to dry.

Always happy to help if and when I can. You may have a bad spot on the ring gear that hangs the starter drive and then locks up the starter so if it happen again you know to grab the fan and turn the engine a bit
