over voltage with new generator on jubilee

I bought a jubilee that somebody converted to 12v, with a single pole alternator or generator, I forget which. Anyway, it started making 16 volts all the time. Someone told me thats one of the ways those generators go bad and to get a new one.
The new one does the same thing. Then somebody told me to make sure it was grounded well. I did that and its still making 16 volts. Any ideas? Can I just put an external voltage regulator on this and call it good, or no?

If you, in fact have a "one-wire" alternator, likely a bastardized Delco, and TWO have both been putting out 16 Volts, I would first question the accuracy of your meter.

Agree, many cheap digital voltmeters will indicate far more than actual voltage because of electrical noise caused by the ignition system. My big Mo 400 moline will indicate 16+ volts on a cheap digital meter, but shows an honest and normal 14.6 on a battery tester analog meter.

If you have access to one of those 50-100 amp battery load testers, they have a big analog voltmeter that is not affected by electrical noise like some digital meters.
The thing is not only a battery tester, but also an excellent charging system troubleshooting tool.

Been fighting health problems. Right eye has been blind since age 6, left eye is much damaged by glaucoma and cataract. Was "lucky " enough to get shingles that imediatly moved into that beat up left eye. Had a couple of foggy dark months.

Ditto what has been said.

post a pic if you can't tell if you have a genny or an alternator.

and what are you using to check the voltage.. and where are you checking it? ( how )
