ive got everything back together except for the hood and muffler I put new rings and a new sleeve in and honed the other 3 I went to prime the oil pump by turning the engine over as the guy that helped me said to and if you cranked on the starter for more than a few seconds it starts putting a little smoke from the bottom of the negative cable at the starter it was hot when I felt it and it cranks over slow any ideas?

"it starts putting a little smoke from the bottom of
the negative cable at the starter it was hot when I
felt it and it cranks over slow "

Cable connection to starter not clean and tight.
Remove the cable and clean it and the stud it
attaches to. If this doesn't fix it, post back. Will
need to know if this is 6 or 12 volt.

If its hot at the cable on starter, it not a good connection. shine it up and tighten. The engine is also tight causing a great current flow. Might want to pull it around, with oil pressure first.

Smoking cable is a bad connection, but I'm missing something.
Title says 6V but you said negative cable at the starter?

Cranking slow is probably two things, bad connection regardless
of polarity and a tight engine from the work you just did.

If it is 6V you can spin the starter/engine with a 12V battery.
Using jumper cables from a spare battery directly to the starter.

For simplicity, negative from battery to the starter, take the
positive from the battery and touch it to the chassis.
It really wouldn't matter which place you hook + or - to, just
easier for conversation.
Make 100% certain it is in neutral, because you are bypassing
the safety switch doing that.

You can also prime the oil pump if needed by removing the plug
and spring/plunger from the front of the engine and putting oil
down the hole. Don't loose the spring and yes the plunger is
supposed to have that flat spot. :)

Thank all of you and it is 6 volt I meant the negative battery terminal to the top of the starter and will turning it over prime it? Or do I need to take that plug out

Ah, I see what I missed now.
Turning it over will likely prime it if the pump is good.
If it doesn't prime relatively quickly though, ad the oil.
You can see oil pressure on the gauge just turning it over.
Especially if you turn it over with a 12V battery.
Not running pressure, but oil pressure just the same.

OK i turned it over a few times but it never moved. And would pull starting it be easier to start it the first time?

Two schools of thought come to mind on pull starting.
Yes, it might be easier than working the starter with a battery.
It is also easier to bend/break things inside the engine if something
is not exactly right. Lesser of two evils I guess?
If you've got the connections fixed, I'd try it with the starter until
I got oil pressure at least. Pull it after that if needed.
I find most of the time an N will slide the rear tires anyway if they
are not weighted so you may not have very good luck pulling it.

P.S. your 6V battery probably needs to be charged again if you
were using it to crank the engine.

Thank you royse I cleaned them terminals and its still the same I have charged the battery I'm going to have a guy look at it again thank you and if you have any other ideas please let me know!
