trailer ramps

I need a set of ramps removable i finished my trailer.should i use 3 inch c channel or 2 x2 1/4 anngle . Ill probly make them 5 or 6 foot long.

C channel is by far the best way to go. I have ramp made of 2X2 angle and they are bent from years of loading tractors

Tom,
It depends on which way you orient the channel. If you can put the channel on edge it will be much stronger than the angle. If you plan on laying the channel flat the angle will actually be a bit stronger. There are pretty complicated equations to figure out if a particular shape will bend or fail but all calculations involve a factor called "moment of inertia". To directly compare one shape against another that's all you need. The properties of the channel can be found at [/url]http://www.engineersedge.com/standard_material/Steel_channel_properties.htm and the property you want to look ... The properties of the angle can be found at http://www.engineersedge.com/standard_material/Steel_angle_properties.htm. The angle has the same value of 0...gle is almost 2 times stronger (0.348/0.197).

These are not removable but they are 60" C channel and very well made.

thanks for the pictures of that roll back trailer but my home made trailer does not do that and my wife and 5 kids wont let me spend the $

It depends on what size trailer you have and what you'll be loading. I would go with the channel hands down, but as you can see, I have a strong tendancy to overbuild things. I built my 8' ramps out of 4" channel, with 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 3/16" angle treads on 6" centers. They weigh 140 lbs each (after you figure in for the welding wire), but I didn't want them to bend...and...I only paid $20 for all the steel to build 3 of them. I use them on a 20' gooseneck with 3 7,000 lb axles.

That's one of a couple of things I've spent the $$$$ on with no regrets. I sold all my various trailers that I was tired of trying to keep the all tires up, all the lights working and the plates current, took the money and had that trailer custom built. Floor is 83 in x 22 ft and has cross members on 12" centers. Two 7000 lb axles with brakes on both, 2 5/16" coupler. I added an 8,000 lb winch, battery box and wired it for charge on the fly.

I had it built with intentions of hauling one heavy machine that would be very difficult to handle any other way.

I don't even own a set of ramps anymore. I finally added a smaller trailer to my fleet, it too is ramp less, having a design which drops the entire trailer floor flat on the ground for loading and picks it back up and pins up for travel.

That's a nice trailer and it looks like it works out great for you. Pj sent me literature about a year after I got my trailer wanting me to up grade it to a hydraulic tail section. The only problem was it adds 1,100 lbs. to trailer weight. Don't really need any think like that with top of deck of trailer is only 32" off of ground.

I used 3" channel on mine, then used steel "T" fence posts cut to 12" for the cross pieces. I put the "knobs" that keep fence wire from slipping on top to make a ramp that tires will grip very well!
