2n with 6 volt system on 8 volt bat.

I have a 2n that has been converted to high energy ignition 6volt system. It wouldn't start with the starter even when turning over adequatly. When pulled to start fired right off. Went to town and got an 8volt bat. and works great. My question is do I need to adjust regulator with 8 volt bat? Any other modifications I should worry about? Thanks for looking.

"...high energy ignition 6volt system.."

I have no idea what that would be.

Electronic ignition maybe? Does the tractor no longer have points?

If indeed it has electronic ignition in it, the problem you had was a weak battery. Turning the starter over did not leave enough voltage to fire the ignition module. Some won't work below 5.2 volts. By pull starting it, you got full battery voltage to the ignition system. A fully charged 6v battery would have started it.

There is a very good chance as well that the higher voltage from the battery will fry the EI.

And a 2N does not have a voltage regulator to adjust.

So, my advice is to post back & identify exactly what a " high energy ignition 6volt system " is.

And if it's EI, get rid of the 8volt battery.

Do you have an 8V battery charger?
If not I would either convert it to 12V or
figure out why it wouldn't start on 6V.

2N's didn't have a voltage regulator, so nothing to adjust.

To prevent points and coils from burning up, you will want
to adjust the resistance between the battery and coil to
match running voltage.

I suspect that resistance may be the issue to start with,
but can't say for sure not knowing what you have installed.

At best an 8 volt battery is a band aid fix for other problems. When was the last time you found a battery charger that will charge an 8 volt battery????? Fix the problems and or switch to a 12 volt system since an 8 volt battery is a problem from the get go

Your tractor is going to start and run great until
the 8 volt battery becomes discharged. Then it will
be worthless and you will not be able to charge it
back up. There is no voltage regulator on a 2N.
Either get a new 6 volt battery or convert it to 12
volt with an alternator.

Ok I guess it's unanimous bad idea. The ignition is electronic, sorry the confusion. My remedy came from the days of a 6volt cockshut combine with starting prob. The 6v batt. was new but did not change any cables so that may be the prob. To answer ? of 8v charger yes I do have one but I guess with no reg. the tractor can't be adjusted to charge the 8v bat. Thanks for the replies and advice.
