OT trouble shooting a mower deck

Last week I hauled a friends Kabota with a front end loader and his 4 wheeler up to his sons house in Culpeper VA.
He had a JD L118 riding mower sitting there he said he was going to junk it, said rear end was bad.
It has a 20hP Briggs and Stratton engine started it up and drove it on the trailer.
I had another JD L110 sitting here with a bad engine I swapped out the rear ends and stripped off any useable parts that I may need later, and found the deck was pristine new blades, all pull lies good and new belt.
Both being 42" decks it was a easy swap.
But the cable pull PTO for the blades would not engage?
At first I thought the belt was to long after some head scratching I finally figured out the mechanism for the blade brakes was froze up as well as the blade spindles
Took it all apart applied grease to the spindles and anti seize to the brake linkage and it now works great
So today I am going to haul it up to Sterling VA and give it to my brother he had a heart attack earlier this year and he won't have to wait on his sons to come home from collage to mow his yard.
Long and short of it when trouble shooting sometimes you just have to go back to the basics.

Good reminder Bart.
The engagement part on brother's JD deck froze up similarly.
Just the engagement part though. It just has a spring to pull
it tight on the belt and the spring couldn't overcome the rust.
Simple fix once I found it!

Had sorta same issue as Royce on old MTD with lever control only mine was also a broken cable. Once fixed SWMBO used to to fine tune horse pasture for a couple years. I even got to use it to mow the lawn a couple times.
