1948 8N 6V to 12V conversion rewiring

Hello all,

I finally got someone to help me lift the hood off of my little tractor so that I can more comfortably rewire it. I got the wiring harness from Yesterdaystractor.com but the insulation colors don't seem to match any descriptions I have found. I have NO experience at this and though I have looked at diagrams and pictograms I can't figure it out exactly. I got it running again BUT several wires on one bundle had nowhere to go and the other bundle is leftover. I have included a photo of it. Why doesn't Yesterdaystractors.com include instructions. Should it be intuitively obvious where it all connects?

As you can see I did solder the crimped on ends and used heat shrink tubing on them to make them more waterproof. Those crimped on ends looked a bit vulnerable.

" Should it be intuitively obvious where it all connects?"

Yes.

Google "wiring diagrams JMOR"

Find the diagram that fits your & alternator (or generator)

" but the insulation colors don't seem to match any descriptions I have found."

That's because electrons are colorblind. Unless you paid big $$$ for an OEM wiring harness, colors are meaningless.

Thank you Bruce (I think LOL)

Well it should be obvious to you that the connections are not obvious to me.

In fact I did refer to those diagrams and the colors on the yesterdaystractors.com harness do not match them either.

If colors are meaningless why are colors indicated on the wiring diagrams? Why do traffic lights have different colors? The meaning is not for the electrons of course but for us to direct them into paths they should follow. THAT should be intuitively obvious.

Bruce, can you label my diagram?

" If colors are meaningless why are colors indicated on the wiring diagrams?"

I need to be more precise in my reply.

Colors are meaningless if you are trying to match them to some diagram you find on the internet.....unless, as I said, it's an OEM harness. Which by definition, yours isn't because it's 12v.

But, the colors are meaningful if you have a diagram that came w/ the harness. and, most importantly, they are meaningful simply because they are different colors.

Example......

6v or 12v, you will have a wire that goes from the solenoid to the ammeter. Look at JMOR's diagram. Find a wire that is long enough to go from your solenoid to the ammeter...and is the same color on both ends!

That's how you wire the tractor.

All you had to do was order a 6V harness and convert it to a 12V set up...

That garbage you got...

Gray is the coil lead
Big red'n goes from bat post on alt to bat side of solenoid...
Short red wire "dunno"

Good luck with that starter harness cuzz that's all you got is a starter kit...

Thanks guys. I guess this will be a learning process. Maybe after I learn what I'm doing I can make up some good harnesses with the correct color insulation to sell on ebay.

So that is the starter harness! Thanks. The other part of the harness is a bundle of longer wires. I couldn't take a photo of it because I put it on the tractor today. I made it work so at least the tractor will start and the battery will charge but there are still a few wires that are not connected. Part of my problem is that this alternator has three wires going into it but the harness had just two.

When I said starter kit I meant that was enuff to get you started rewiring it NOT TO START the engine...

Tracers are not needed if that's your worry...

long red from alt to - side of amp gauge, short red from batt.post on starter sol to + side of amp gauge. white/yellow from small post on back of starter sol to starter switch. If you send me your e-mail I'll send u some pics and try to explain the rest of the wiring , the ign.switch, lights etc.

That would be great and MUCH appreciated.
