9N Cat 1 Hitch Questions

I have a question about the Cat 1 Hitch on 9N tractors!
I am still buying parts for the 3 PT hitch so that I can run a 5" rotary mower on my 9N in the fall of this year.
On page 7 of the Master Parts Catalog part number 576 shows a bunch of parts that I am not sure I need to run a rotary mower!
My question is what all do I need to run a mower safely on my 9n?
I am new to setting up a 3 pt hitch so pile on the smart *ss comments, I can take it!

I don't have the catalog to look, so I'm going off the cuff here.
You need and ORC so the mower doesn't push the tractor.
You need sway bars and you will want check chains, especially
if you don't have a Zane Thang or similar to add position control.
If you haven't run one, is there someone near you that can coach?
Common sense goes a long way, but there are things a guy just
doesn't know until someone shows him or its too late.
I do not hook the top link solid on a mower.
The mower needs to be able to move up and down at the rear as
it follows the contour of the land. Some mowers have this built in.
Some did have it and have been defeated by home repairs.
Post a picture of what you have. Makes it easier to help that way.

I don't have the parts catalog in front of me right now so I don't know what parts you are referencing. As far as running safely, first you need a good mower, something that will not throw debris on you or anyone or thing else close by. I don't have a problem with it myself, but some of the guys have talked about using old rubber conveyor belts to skirt the sides. Your gonna probably want a pto shaft that is covered or shielded to keep stuff (you) from wrapping around it. You for sure have to have an ORC. If your not familiar, its a device that goes on your pto that will allow your tractor to power the mower but not the other way around. It keeps the mower from pushing the tractor when you engage the clutch. Other than that, I would recommend stabilizer bars to keep it from swinging from side to side, especially if you are going to be mowing close to a fence line or anything else you can bump into.

The only place I am going to mow is on the pasture perimeter, so yeah I will be right along the fence! Thanks for the reply.

I don't have any mentors nearby, you guys and gals here are it, and a wealth of information you are!
Why don't you hook the top link solidly to the mower?
I'm posting a picture but please don't laugh to hard! I do have an ORC but took it off just to paint a little.

My toplink is hooked solid. Idk if thats technically wrong or bad, but what happens is if i mow over a small hill when my tractor starts down my mower comes up. I dont know how to set it up otherwise because i have been told not to use a chain bc if the front of ur mower catches on something like a small stump it could piviot on the lift arms and over on to the operator.

My small pasture is basically flat, no hills or humps! But I will catalog what you have told me to pass on to others!
Thanks for the reply.

Nothing to laugh about!! That's a pretty tractor!! Do you have the parts that connect to the lift arms?? The leveling rods and lower arms?? And the brackets that mount around the PTO for the check chains?? Not sure if you just have them off for painting purposes also.....

If you don't drop me an e-mail and I can help you with some of those items and point you to what you will need/want to buy and good sources for them...

Should be an e-mail link on my post....

No email on your post but this is what I have for this tractor part number wise. Please refer to the 1939-1953 master parts catalog page 7.

Part Number:
5182
5375 2 each
5374 2 each
555
556
535 is attached to the tractor as picture previous in post shows.
I have no pins or chains as of yet.

And I also have the leveling box from top to bottom and the rod as shown on page 12 and 13 but again, no pins, nuts or bolts.
I just don't want to buy a bunch of parts that aren't needed to run a 5' rotary mower safely!
Thanks in advance.

Of that list, you only need 555, 556 (the lower lift arms) for a 3 point hitch mounted rotary cutter.

The other parts are for the 11 hole drawbar and the stay bars to keep the lift arms from riding up when you are pulling a trailer from the draw bar - for example...

You also need pretty much everything on page 12 which are right and left leveling rods (that 555 and 556 attach to) and the check chains and mounting plates.

edit:
------- OOPS, I guess our messages passed on the Interwebs ;)

Thank you for the info! I am trying to keep it safe but also spend as little as I need to and still stay safe with it, if that makes any sense.

Thanks for the compliment! Yeah, it is a pretty tractor. It was a rust bucket when I bought it years ago and tried to doll it up. I asked my wife to take pictures of it for posterity because once this tractor goes back to work it is down hill appearance wise for the next 73 years!

I have everything you need for that tractor. I'm parting out an 8N. Arms, leveler block, chains, sway bar and brackets. My email's open. Keith

If it were me I would contact forum member Old Hokey. He makes an adapter to mount an 8N style drawbar onto your 9/2N.
Far better than the 11 hole drawbar and all the doohicky stay bars etc. Stronger, safer, better.

I don't mean you have to replace the top link with a chain.
But there should be some mechanism to allow the rear of the
mower to come up a little without the front coming up.
Otherwise when/if it tries to do that something will break.
Many mowers have a top link hookup that moves on its own.
Its the ones that are solid that I worry about.

You MUST have an over running clutch on your pto shaft. If you don't mower blade will keep turning even when you depress clutch. The mower then acts like a big"flywheel"and continues to push tractor;Very Dangerous!

The sway bars others have spoken of go from axle to where mower attaches to 3pt lift arms to prevent mower from moving side to side.
While not needed to operate mower they are suggested to use.
I have been without them for 3 years but putting them on this year.
I have come close to taking out a post while getting close to the fenceline when I hit a dip in the ground causing mower to shift to the side on it's own.

noticed hubcap on front,if you catch it on a fence it will turn you into the fence, i reversed my fronts to cover hubs makes it safer
