I called about this tractor this morning after seeing it last night and as luck would have it, its just a few miles from home. I asked about the engine problems and he said it had a little blow by around the aircleaner and dipstick. Idk what that means exactly. Blow by is refering to the rings is it not? I think its a 600, i dont see a center nut on the rear axle but u really cant tell with that pic. Thinking about offering 1400. http://chattanooga.craigslist.org/grd/4569514301.html

Blow by is Power Stroke gasses "Blowing By" the piston rings and into the crankcase. Worn rings and cylinders are the causes.

Tell the owner that it will be hard to get parts for since it is a 1940 model.. Use that to lower the price.

them 9n-jubilee work masters from 1949 are rare. :)

I'd go look at it and then explain why it is priced to high as in but not telling him that he does not know what he has. Sad how few people take the time to learn what they own before they try to sell things

Well, i went and looked at it. Its an 800. Fired right up. Body looked decent, only one small spot rusted throug, several old repairs. Rear tires were dry rotted pretty bad and the tubes were coming through the rims around the valve stem. Gauges didnt work. The big arm that goes to the front axle was welded up with a tube over it and the smaller arm was rusted bad enough that i would b afraid to use it much without replacing it. I told him it wasnt really what i was looking for that it just needed too much for me. He asked me to make an offer, i told him$800. He didnt seem turned off, said he had some other ppl wanting to look at it and he might give me a call.

What 800 series was it?? As in did you look at the model and serial number on it>> 5 speed or 4 speed??

5 forward gears

So that means it could be a 850 or an 860 and the 860 is worth more then the 850 due to having live PTO

Apparently he has changed his ad.
It is now listed as a "1950 something 800".
Rear tires and rims are $1100 or so NEW.
At $800 you'd have ~$2000 into it right off the bat not counting gauges.
Gauges aren't terribly expensive other than the proofmeter and cable.
Not a bad deal if it runs well enough for you to get some use out of it.
Model and serial numbers are on a flat just above and aft of the starter.
Top number should be 850 or 860, that will tell if it has live PTO.

Yeah, he was saying something about it being an 800 and that he had just seen that before i got there. I went ahead and told him that he was a few years off on the date too. Told him that then told him i would give 800 for it. Doesnt matter to me, same money, i already knew about what it was. I left wandering if i would regret offering that much for it. Just has a lot wrong with it :?

I wouldn't go as high as $800 even, unless you plan to use it with noxious oil blowby in your face and a smoky exhaust.

If I were you I'd wait for something that doesn't need an immediate engine rebuild, on top of all the other things you know it needs and things you have yet to find out that it will need. Better to spend a little more on something that won't bleed you for money and time.

My two cents worth.
Sounds like you're willing to do restoration work, but start with a better foundation.

I wasnt gonna make the guy an offer at all cause he was asking 1600. Didnt want to offend. I have a fairly decent N that does everything i can think of for it to do. I dont really need a tracto. I think there is some kinda bug that inhabits these old tractors and its got on me. Ive been looking for another one to piddle with, figuring that i would fix one at a time and have one for when the other is down. Hopefully tho i will b getting my G grandpas old ford if family can agree to let me have it and not rust to the ground.

"noxious oil blowby in your face and a smoky exhaust"

Like this? LOL It sure was miserable for a while, but this one
actually cleared right up just by hooking it to a plow and
working the snot out of it after an ATF soak. (running in all pictures)
Sometimes I think Murphy goes over to Randy's house and
leaves me alone. Not often though! ;)
See my redneck bodywork coming up!

I bought it.
This will b a long term project i think. Needs a few parts and lots of tlc. The tires will b good enough to move it around on until i get ready to replace them. Hood is n pretty good shape, fenders a little worse. Points look melted but it starts right up. Hyd seems to work good, trans goes into every gear easy. Need to hook up the op guage and see how that looks. Was told it was good. $800 for a ford 850 that runs.

Cant figure out how to get pics on from my phone

and let us know if we can help with your project.

congrats
a running, moving 850 for $800, I'd take the chance too. good tractors.
I recently got a 850 that didn't run (less than your price, but I knew it was broke)
Turned out my block isn't saveable, but don't care. A used engine will turn up sooner or later local, and I'll have a very good model tractor for cheap. It's just work.......
