1951 8N drag link tube with Wagner FEL?! Arrrrgh.

Went about to replace the right-hand side, front tie rod end. Previous owner had WELDED the nut to the stud, and the rod end to the tube. I managed to get everything loose but the tie rod end was screwed in all the way into the drag link tube and is barely budging with some heavy breaker bars/pipe wrenches/heat.

Tractor is a '51 8N with a Wagner loader. Looks like some home-made adapters on the front wheel spindle pitmans to bring the drag links in to clear the FEL tubes.

Here's the problem: I removed the right-side drag link and clamped the tie-rod end in a large vise, proceeded to crank the tube while applying heat. It hasn't broken, but I can tell that it will if I keep going. Soaking it in kerosene until I can figure out what to do.

Both of my front drag link tubes (just the tubes) measure 28.5" end-to-end. Where can I find one?! I don't know if these were special for the Wagner, or early '51 or late '51. One side does measure about 2" longer due to the longer arm on one side of the steering box.

Any info = greatly appreciated.

(quoted from post at 18:15:11 07/15/14) I have a set, Let me know if you want them. Came off of a 1950 8n side mount distributor.

That's awesome. I'm gonna give the old one one more try after soaking, but I don't anticipate any success without destruction.

How much you want for the set?

I'm still hoping someone can give an explanation about if these were earlier style and standard, or a special one-off for the Wagner FEL. I don't see anything mentioned in the Wagner installation manual about steering modifications.

I certainly am glad for this forum though.

To break the tie rod end from the tube - place the tube/tie on an anvil or metal surface. Take a hammer and beat the tube at the connection all around and I assure you it will then loosen.

All 8n drag link tubes for the "late" steering box were 28.5" long.....unless the rear tie rods have been changed to the shorter NAA style. don

This is good to know. There must have not been very many produced in that timeframe, and there must not have been any cross-model fitment. Nobody seems to sell these things!

stimpy451 This is what I have. My tube portion is only 11 inches long so i don't think they will work. Here are some pictures

Awesome. I'm going to try one last time to get the bad rod end off my tube. If I can't, I'll give you a call. Won't be until Fri or so until I can get back at it.

Thanks!
