Late 8N Steering Gear Rebuild

I am putting together a parts list to rebuild my steering gear and came across nylon thrust bearings on this website. I wanted to see if anyone has used these and what the general opinion is on them.

There should be a law against selling those. Use the regular roller bearings and cups and avoid those plastic things like the plague.

the plastic bearings are cr@p.

get real rollers and cups

the boxes are basic and easy to rebuild.

Thanks for the information. I thought that plastic would be a little too soft for handling thrust loads. Just ordered most of the parts I will need but a little confused looking at the parts diagram. In particular are items 25 and 26 in this diagram. Are 25 and 26 the seal and retainer replaced by this part or is there an inner and outer seal? I guess i am just confused on why the diagram shows two retainers per side unless one 25 is the retainer and the other 25 was the seal but then there would be two seals per side.

25- seal
26- dust seal (felt packing)

You need 25 & 26... X-2

I don't understand the two 25s in that diagram either my box only had one seal. The new rubber seal is thinner than the old cork looking seal. I had plenty of room in housing , so right or wrong I put the new seal in than the old seal for a dust cover. Refilled box with 90w and have no leaks at sector shafts.

Locating item number #26 (p/n 86553476) is proving to be difficult. When I Google the part number I don't find any retailers except New Holland. I did find this part that based on the description might be the right dust seal however I can not find p/n 8N3586 on any of the parts diagrams to verify if it is correct. Might have to call New Holland in the morning to see if p/n 86553476 is still the current number or if it has been superseded. Has anyone else ran into this?

Just found this kit which seems to contain all of the needed parts. Interestingly, that kit p/n does not show up on steiners website but part ABC441 does and would appear to have all the seals and hardware for both sides of one sector shaft. Does anyone have any experience with this kit?

(By the way has anyone else noticed when trying to past an url to another retailers website the forum software disables the link and if spelled out it replaces the text?) :?:

8N3586 is the felt seal,,, D5UZ3591A is the sector seal ( I also have a NAPA #11055 for it)... For the side cover o-ring I use CNH 9636445 are a -230 I have found the aftermarket replacements to be the wrong size..

This info is in the back of a FO-4 manual :wink:
