I have a 48 8n front mount dist.6 volt. At some time some one converted it to 12 volt, then went back to 6 volt. The altanater is still in place only one white wire going some where? last evening cut all the excess wires off from the tractor. (lots of wires i suspect the one white wire coming from alt. charged the battery cause it never drained the batt. after weeks of using it. where does the on white wire from alt.go

Do do want it to be 6v or 12v?

" where does the on white wire from alt.go"

That would depend on the alternator.

You might have a 3-wire alternator w/ only one wire. Or it might be a real one wire alternator.

Take a couple pics (front & back) and the 12v guys can ID it for you.

Before I spent a lot of time on it though, I'd take it off & let an auto store tell you if it is any good.

Google "wiring diagrams JMOR" for the wiring once you ID the alternator.

you say it was converted to 12v, then back to 6.. but the alt is still there.

did they make it a 6v alt?

need more info.

what battery? polarity of chassis?

Most alternators are 12 volts. Look at the battery. Does it have 3 cells (6 volt) or 6 cells (12 volt)? Post back.

" it is 6volt positive ground "

You might want to verify that with a meter. A 6 volt positive ground alternator on an 8N would be pretty rare. I've got one in a 29 Ford, but most alternators used on tractors are 12v.

If it is a 12v alternator & you have a 6v battery in it, you will soon boil the battery over.
