Need weedwhacker--prob straight shaft--prob never
put a grass head on it but want one that will handle
a 10-12" grass/weed blade and a Beaver blade for
shrubs and2-3" undergrowth..Suggestions??I don't
like the big double handle/bicycle handles....would
be used with grass blade and Beaver blade..

I was really impressed with my neighbor's 4 stroke ryobi from home depot..... Smooth and powerful, no mixed gas

We only use "Stihls" and the smallest one is an FS76 which has a chain saw tooth blade. Works very well.

Thanks-my neighbors Ryobi just bit the dust-getting opinions for him.I have a Toro that has really been good-----His Ryobi was running good then suddenly lost power and died...I think he had a bad gas mix and ruined the motor--compression checks low..

I have several Echo's with grass and brush heads and they have been very reliable and work well. Using a brush blade without extension handles is a kickback accident waiting to happen. Speaking from 20+ years of experience for 2"-3" woody growth a chainsaw is far quicker, safer, and less work despite the fact I am getting old and you have to kneel or bend over.....

My last two seek whackers have been Sears Craftsman (Poulan, I believe) 2 strokes. Both have been adequate and parts support is very good.

Problems have been more the result of federal regulations rather than design or quality.

I agree--I just like that option--like a few days
ago I had one large gardenia bush in the yard to cut
and didn't want to put my saw in the ant bed/dirty
numerous individual stems that were mostly 2-3"
diameter..have worn out only one beaver blade over
the years but I like them when needed--a good
grass/weed blade is a must though...

Several yrs ago I had a 4-stroke--it was really
heavy to handle--I'm sure they have improved--I like
the "no gas mixing".

I've had a Troy-Built 4 stroke for a couple years now. It's powerful, but that's the only good thing I can say about it. It's heavy, you've got to tilt it to pour gas in it and checking the oil is such a PITA that I don't check it anymore, I change after EACH use.

I had a Riobi that I lived but it was back when they were made decent. When it died this year I bought a Stihl. Love it. Also love their warranty. Four years! I made sure all of those blades fit on it. I may never use it but you just don't know.

4 stroke ryobi

Bought mine in 1999 and still going strong. The only thing I have done to it was replace a fuel line last year.

just bought a stihl fs 240 it will cut anything you can get it to, replaced a fs 250, sit down this is a good one, prepare to pay 600, plus for it, i bought these after having a shed full of cub cadets, homlites, weedeaters and ryobi's all dead within 3 months or not enough power to do the job

First one I had was an Echo... it lasted 20+ years so I bought another one last year, you can get all the usual attachments and differant blades for them, I like it so far.

I'd vote for a D2 Cat for the brush and a DR walk behind.

No, not gonna pay $600 for something I use as little as I can get by with..Bommagas will ruin all of them no matter what u pay..For $600 it would have to have a go get er done button I could push before I sat back and watched it do all the work..If I used one everyday and overcharged folks like lots of lawn svcs do, then I might consider one..

Good outdoor power equipment is not cheap. A good solid straight shaft trimmer capable of running a brush blade and not self destructing is going to cost you north of $400. I paid almost that much for my first low end commercial grade Echo 30 years ago. You can buy cheap but be prepared to buy often.....

I just bought a Stihl a few weeks ago, curve shaft and I have worked it hard. Plenty of power. I am happy with it except for one thing, my arm gets hot right near the elbow due to the exhaust.

My Toro does that also..You'd think a brilliant engineer would catch little, important things like that..
