I got time to work on one of the N's today. Started with the one that was loosing power. Point gap near zero, no sign of any rub block lube at all. Distributer cap cracked. Now this was a tractor I bought last summer from a guy I know, pretty decent guy. He had it in to a supposedly good shop to get it ready to sell. I'm not impressed with the tune up he did on it at all and yes, Jon gave me the receipts from the work he had done. The shop in question is owned by an older guy who's planning on retiring this fall. I'm starting to wonder if he didn't start letting stuff slide when he decided that he was going to retire last year???? Anyway, tested by plowing a little. Works great now.

Plastic rubbing block? I've seen those wear off real quick.
Glad to hear you've got working as it should be!

cracked cap? check that axle king pin! might be a large part of the problem smacking the dizzy cracking cap and jarring the crud out of it.

no excuse for the lack of lobe lube..

Has not been run in ruff ground sense I bought it. Plus the nipple is what's broke and the boot was in place. But no pieces inside the boot? I've basically used it to mow lawn with sense I bought it while using the other N for work. SIL used it last week with the rear blade, thought it sounded a little funny, but this break isn't by any means new.

i'll assume you completely ignored my post so i won't bother trying to help you any more.

everything you have said so far sounds like a worn axle king pin.

good luck.. my last post to you.

Sound, I didn't ignore you. I said that sense I bought the tractor, that had receipts for a fresh tune up, it's ran fine until a couple of days ago. And that when taking it apart I found evidence that the cap had been broken for some time and there was no sign of lube on the run block. I know it needs a pin and bushing. With what it's doing right now that can wait till fall harvest is done. If the cap had broken after the tune up the busted pieces would have been in the plug wire boot. They were missing completely. I've already replaced the pin and bushing in my other N so I'm very familiar with pin/bushing problems.

That's the cap. I've run the tractor maybe 20 hours total sense I bought it. I never had the cap off it until yesterday.

Like Royce said, on some new import points, the rubbing block will wear very quickly.
With the cap being broke by the axle, maybe the old guy just got tired of junk new parts. New cap and rotor that destroy each other at the first engine turn.
So he just put the old one back on.
A little squeeze of the spark plug wire terminal to miss-shape
it a little, so when you plug it in, it won't fall out.
It'll be fine.

No I put a new cap on it.
As far as quality the points were pretty poor and didn't line up right.
