FINALLY. I just wanted to thank everyone who provided answers and the experts who are always willing to share information about these great little tractors.
It is a 1950 8N side mount distributor, it was the tractor that my Dad bought new in 1950, the year I was born. I grew up on this tractor, many great memories.
It has been a long project, off and on as I had time. I have rebuilt the hydraulic system, pump and top cover. I had trouble with the top cover, used Zane's jig and still could not get it adjusted. talked to Zane and we figured it out over the phone. Thanks Zane.
Rebuilt the rear axle, new differential bearings, axle bearings and seals, brakes. Transmission was in good shape, never gave me any problems, looked good inside, no gears damaged so I left it alone.
I did a complete engine rebuild with the help of John's Old Iron three part writeup on his site.
Rebuilt steering box and all front end related parts.
Rebuilt the generator, governor and had the starter rebuilt. I am keeping it a 6 volt system. Also rebuilt the carburetor with the help of GB in MT. and a few phone calls. Thanks Gary
So far everything is working as it should, hydraulics, carb, governor, brakes. It is holding 20 psi at idle hot, 30 psi at ¾ throttle under a load. Much better than it was, almost 0 psi and 10 psi at full throttle. So far just one oil leak at governor.
My next step is to but it all back together, tin on, wiring etc. and use it for a couple of weeks mowing, We have hills here so it should be a good workout. then tear it back down and prep for paint.
Thanks again to all who share their knowledge on this site (and others) It sure helped.

For a tractor you're going to keep, I think you're doing it exactly right.
Getting it mechanically sound, fix all the leaks etc, then worry about the looks.
It sure feels good to bring one back to working order don't it?
Especially when it has a family connection.
Congratulations!

P/S - don't work it without the air cleaner.

Looking good to me. Congrates on all the forward progress your making.

My Dad never had anything like these tractors to hand down and my kids have no intrest in mine.

A friend long ago taught me to make horsepower before making it pretty. Of course he was refering to cars but works here too :)
