Steering Wheel Removal

Stuck on is right!!

Just thought I'd share my victory over the wheel that hasn't been off since '53 by the look of it.

Maybe my hose clamp idea will be useful for someone;
it keeps the hooks from letting go.

I used my Proto crankshaft balancer puller but inverted so the flat side is up.
Previously I had taken those 3 grabbers from a cheap puller with a good for nothing screw and drilled them for pins so as to use them with the Proto works. I hadn't noticed till the photos and after the wheel was off that one of my cross pins had backed out somewhat -- but it still held fortunately.

Cheers,
Terry

Oh, did I mention my favorite penetrant? :D
If I kept spraying after the fact the steering shaft threads and spline would actually get shiny as the brown rust streams off. I had only let it soak in for 30 minutes after removing the acorn nut.

Glad you got it off without damaging the shaft. That's the most
important part since steering wheels are fairly easy to come by.
Here's what I used. The arms were in closer before the wheel let loose.

Hey! I LIKE THAT PULLER OF YOURS!!

I was looking at my collection and I also have all the pieces of yours but it never dawned on me to use the spokes! Pure genius! :)

A big hose clamp or some such, would keep your arms in close.
Oh sorry, you mean they stayed put until the wheel let go. Gotcha.

Good job! I usually wind up breaking something else when trying to get something off/fix something else.

I never realized what those silver bolt on pieces were used for with the puller? I thought they were just an extension to use with the jaw parts. I feel like a real dummy now...thanks...lol

No, I think you were right.
Royse just came up with an innovative way to use them to grab the spokes.

I wish I was that smart! Dang, I usually feel like Jethro Bodine trying to naught naught something... :?

You're right Gary, they're used to hold the jaws.
I just removed the jaws and used them as they were.
Simple mind, simple solution. Free to boot! :)
