9N no start

I just reassembled my 1942 9n after replacing the clutch, flywheel and pressure plate. I also installed a new starter since my old one lost the drive gear. When I reconnected the starter switch cable to the new starter, the starter began cranking even though the key was off and the tractor was in gear! I had long ago removed the automotive ignition switch and replaced it with the original on/off switch and neutral start saddle. After pulling the cable off the starter, I took the tractor out of gear and reattached the cable with no attempted starts this time. I got in the seat and tried to crank the tractor but could only hear a few pops like arching wires. When I opened the fuel door so I could see what was going on, I could only see a few pops come from the positive terminal of the battery cable.
My tractor is a 12v negative ground and I had rewired it a few years ago according to the OEM specs and it had run great. Any ideas on what to check to troubleshoot?

First thing is to get the connections tight--popping
at the connections means bad connections.

The key has nothing to do w/ the starter engaging. It provides current to the ignition circuit, not the starting circuit. Unless you've got it wired wrong.......

You've got a loose connection/bad cable.

Find it as Tom said.

Next, Google "wiring diagrams JMOR" and find the diagram that fits your tractor & alternator. Wire that wrong & you will burn up the alternator.

as said. popping is usually arcing.. meaning bad connections.

now. are you still using the mechanical start switch.. or a solenoid?

I am using the mechanical start switch. I have totally rewired this tractor 2 years ago and have not had any issues. When I split the tractor to replace the clutch, I only disconnected the battery and wires going forward toward the engine. I have checked and tightened all the wires and don"t see any signs of arcing. I pulled the start switch yesterday and it appeared the switch was stuck in the "start" position, so I worked it back and forth and got some penetrating oil on the plunger so it would release better. I am recharging the battery and will test later today. I did notice the battery cable on the positive terminal was very hot, so I am hoping it was from the start switch staying engaged. That would also explain why the tractor tried to start when I was reconnecting the starter.
